Leeds-born Downes began his playing career with Ossett Albion in non-league football. While playing for the club, he was watched by Grimsby who were impressed by the youngster, and offered the player a contract.
Stated one of the fittest players at Blundell Park last year by boss Paul Groves, Stephen made a several first-team appearances and was rated as a good prospect. But, due to Grimsby’s own financial problems, the versatile player was let go to cut down the wage bill. Downes was then brought to York this summer by Chris Brass, after impressing the player/manager while on trial.
