Stephen Brackstone was born in Hartlepool in 1982. The first professional club he played football for was Middlesbrough. Brackstone came to Boro’ as a trainee, and turned professional in the year 2000. But, despite spending around one-and-a-half years at the Riverside, he never made any appearance in their first team and was confined to playing in the reserves even though he’d represented England at youth levels.
Stephen was told his contract would not be renewed towards the end of the 2001/2002 season, and so Terry Dolan came in offering the player first team football after impressing in a two-week trial period.
The player started to become a fans favourite in his first season in a city shirt, due to his skilful play and goalscoring ability. But he was then struck down with appendicitis around Christmas time and missed virtually the rest of the season. Since then, the club have brought new midfielders in, and Stephen has found it difficult to get back in the starting line-up.
