York City 1 Hull City 0 (AET)
The FA Youth Cup - 1st Round Proper
Report by Carrie Stockdale
The YT’s got their first win of the season courtesy of a goal from Byron Webster in the 1st round proper of The FA Youth Cup in a game that showed the heart and passion of the team.
For the 108 people that attended they definitely got their money’s worth.
Team: Stockdale, Kamara, Anderson (c), Staley, Green, Stewart, Webster, Ashcroft, Arthur, Haw, Lyons. Subs: Reid, Collins, Foote
York started off well, playing some good passing football and had a chance early on from a long throw by Green which was headed wide by Haw.
A good block by Staley after two long throws prevented Hull from getting the upper hand early on in the first half.
York continued with some good pressure with a throw in finding its way to Webster’s feet in the box, who turned and had a right footed shot that was scuffed wide.
Another good move started by Arthur just inside the York half, the ball spread across the field to the right full back, Kamara a one two with Haw who’s shot from the edge of the box went over the bar.
A ball from Green then split the Hull defense and was picked up by Lyons who held off the last defender only to have his left footed shot blocked by a Hull defender.
Half Time – 0-0
Hull came out after the break looking very determined but a shot from Hull was blocked by Anderson.
After some pressure from Hull, York seemed then to get back into the rhythm of the game and a ball headed down by Kamara to Arthur, a through ball chased down by Haw to Lyons, a blocked tackle resulted in the ball spinning toward the goal only to be cleared by the Hull defence off the line.
The York defence then found themselves under pressure and a good save by Stockdale and a clearance by Webster saved them from finding themselves 1-0 down.
Coming up to full time, York continued to put pressure on the Hull defence, looking for that all important winning goal.
A through ball from Anderson to Haw who turned the Hull centre half managed to poke the ball through to Lyons, his on target shot was parried by the Hull keeper and cleared.
The four minutes of injury time were the longest four minutes I have ever known with a last ditch shot by Ashcroft parried by the keeper out to Lyons who’s shot hit the outside of the post.
Full Time – 0-0
Extra Time was eventful with tempers beginning to show, yet York continued to fight for each and every ball.
A good run by Stewart who got to the by-line and pulled the ball back to the penalty spot to Haw who shot wide.
Then came the exciting part! (98 mins)
The Hull defence cleared the ball which was picked up by Green and knocked back toward the Hull goal, a Hull defensive header to the edge of the box was controlled well by Webster, chested down and with a right footed volley, launched the ball into the top left corner.
York City 1-0 Hull City
Even after the goal York continued to push forward and a strong midfield run by Ashcroft out to Arthur who crossed into the box but was cleared by Hull for a corner.
York then made a substitution with Under-16, Stephen Collins replacing Robbie Haw.
York found themselves under pressure after Hull made a substitution and pushed three up front, however they managed to hang on to the lead that they had deserved.
A dangerous ball flying across the mouth of the goal being cleared by Kamara, a good solid save by Stockdale and a block by Anderson helping them hold on until the final whistle.
York City 1 Hull City 0 (AET)
All I can say is thanks to Byron for scoring that goal because I don’t think that my heart would have been able to withstand a penalty shoot out!!!!
As for the Man of the Match there were three contenders but my final decision was Kane Ashcroft, he battled hard throughout the game and made himself known in the midfield, a well deserved victory all round really.
York now face Macclesfield in the 2nd round of The FA Youth Cup at Bootham Crescent on 5th November, 7pm kick off. |
