Youth Alliance Cup 1st Round
Preston NE 3 York City 1
Match report by Carrie Stockdale
This weeks youth game away at Preston in the Youth Alliance Cup was always going to be a difficult tie against the team that knocked us out of the 2nd round of the same competition last season in a 6-1 defeat.
Team: Stockdale, Law, Anderson, Bailey, Davies, Coad (c), Ashcroft, McKenzie, Stewart, Arthur, Lyons. Subs: Reid, Webster, Green, Bunce, Kamara
York started off strong putting some good pressure on the home side. The first ten minutes saw a shot from Coad deflected wide, a cross from Law to Stewart on the far post and the shot to go wide.
Preston counter attack only to be broken down by the York defence.
Another ten minutes of good pressure from York with plenty of good passing play. A great ball to Davies from Law to Arthur who put the ball across the box to Lyons who shot wide.
York substitution on the half hour mark saw Nathan Kamara replacing Mike McKenzie.
York were then caught at the back by Preston which saw Bailey clear a ball from the goal line, however against the run of play York found themselves 1-0 down after being unable to deal with Preston’s giant centre forward.
The goal seemed to kick start York who fought back well. A well worked move on the right involving a one, two between Law and Arthur, on to Lyons who put it out towards Ashcroft who’s on target shot was saved by the keeper.
More good pressure from York with Coad & Ashcroft working hard in midfield and Arthur and Lyons running across the Preston back four.
Half Time – 1-0
Preston came out in the second half looking very strong and looking to increase their lead. York continued to work hard and put pressure on the home side, but to no avail.
York then found themselves 2-0 down after a moment of confusion between Stockdale & Davies, which resulted in a far post tap in for the Preston striker.
Second substitution for York in the 62nd minute saw Andrew Green replacing Steven Lyons.
Some good passing football followed the substitution, yet again York found themselves under a great deal of pressure from the home side and conceded another goal.
Preston’s goal came from a cross from the left, completed with a powerful far post header from the centre forward.
Final substitution for York saw Byron Webster replacing Graeme Law.
Even at 3-0 down the York team didn’t let their heads go down and continued to battle for each and every ball, a late shot from Ashcroft was palmed over the bar by the Preston keeper.
York managed to get a goal back on 90 mins with a corner from Stewart headed back on the far post by Anderson and a great volley by Bailey into the back of the net.
Full Time – 3-1
The scoreline doesn’t show how the York team played in this match, they played some great football and played well as a team.
The next YT game is on Wednesday 15th October, 7pm kick off at Bootham Crescent for the 1st round of the FA Youth Cup against Hull.
York will be without 3rd Year trainees Graeme Law, Sean Davies, Matthew Coad, Mike McKenzie as the FA Youth Cup is for under 18’s only. |
