I thought that too!! I'm glad England won yesterday, and I haven't a clue why any fellow Englishman would moan about beating the French!

I hope you didn't mean me! I've been a fan of rugby (both codes) for ages! (Mind you I am the man of many season tickets, so what else would you expect!) Laughing

What a day...

I've been lucky enough to go to a number of big sporting events around the world but the atmospherre at the Stade de France last night was simply unblievable. There was one point during the second half when the French were singing La Marseilles and the noise, passion and atmosphere was like nothing else. Makes Twickenham or Wembley for England rugby/football seem distintly second rate.

The atmosphere in and around Paris all day was fantastic too. The majority of French were in fact spot on pre and post match and we had many drinks and until the very early hours of this morning with them. It was also highly amusing to see thousands of very pissed off Kiwis all over the place with nothing but glum looks from all them.

Just got to work out how to get a ticket for the final now...

Aye, I was watching the England game with John Moran and Kathryn, along with Ray and Dot, in the Woking snooker pub when I heard the score through gritted teeth mate.

Regarding the rah rah rugger, do not get me wrong. I have tended to watch internationals if nothing else is on, and as you know having been on the end of mickey taking from Cern and me when England beat Scotland a few years back (in the Cross Keys I think?), anything for a bit of friendly rivalry is fine with me.

But any class war/values thing is entirely a reaction mate. It isnt me starting phone debates about how we should all act like Rugby players and moaning on about respect blah blah blah. There has been no respect between the Premier clubs and England rugby for the past 4 years over player release, no respect given when the Irish player went into the crowd in France and smashed up a fan, no respect when the fan, indeed, baited the player. Its swings and its roundabouts. People waffle on about respect, true values etc, when basically they have watched two games in 4 years. Thats what really riles me up.

And of course, being a predominantly (not universally of course) middle class, public school, Oxbridge, city banking private jet flying sport helps with the dislike. (There were not many working class people except me at the Varsity game I got invited to at Twickenham a few years back)

Its quite strange defending football. I 'll be cheering on Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand next...thats another reason to dislike RU.

I must admit that it does start to do your head in when all these journos and commentators start having a go at football and saying how much more respect there is in Rugby etc etc. I think there are enough incidents such as the ones that you mentioned that go on in Rugby but just get lost in the headlines.

Having said that I do hope they win. Tanghaller is way off the mark with his South of England XV. As an RL fan he should look at the positive contributions people like Jason Robinson, Joe Lydon and Shaun Edwards have made to the game since it went professional on and off the pitch.

There will always be sports we get more passionate about. I mean if we are to bring class into it then people shouldn't really have got excited about Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent winning all those Olympic medals in Rowing. However no matter what your background you could see how they had pushed themselves to the absolute limit and I think that is to be admired.

6.6 million people staying up to the early hours back in 2000 isn't bad and testimony to what was a great achievement by one of the greatest ever olympians and then for Pinsent to do it all over again in 2004.

My Dad rowed and played Hockey for York (not simultaneously) - two sports usually seen as the preserve of "Public Schools" - He had a pretty ordinary upbringing in Heslington and then South Bank. Perhaps some sports just appeal to different people in different ways? FWIW, my brother then got into rowing for both Bootham and York and met a variety of different people from hugely different backgrounds. He also played for York RU for a bit and again, many of the lads he met from there were just ordinary blokes. Why do the class bias and misconception only seemingly exist one way?

More a general point AMFT and not aimed at you!

Loads of people I went to school and college with played union for Sedgley Park at some level or other, and there ain't no poshies in Bury. I still don't approve of the history of the governing body though and find it incredibly dull to watch.

I think the reason sports such as rugger onion, (until the past couple of decades) Athletics, rowing etc were middle class sports is cos of the lack of professionalism. You couldn't afford to play sport at a highly competitive level, unless you had either a very well paying job which you could do part time and still earn a living, or a trust fund- otherwise how would you keep the roof over your head?
Having said that however, Rugby Union wasn't traditionally a posh boys' sport in the territories (Scotland, Ireland and Wales) so I'm not too sure how that works out with my argument Embarassed

In Wales it is the national game and played by all. In Scotland and Ireland just like in England always thought of as the preserve of the more privelaged classes many of the top public schools and colleges were and still are represented in the Leagues there.

Not much different to football in that respect, many Colleges and Universities are now playing at a decent level of the semi-pro game.

rugby union is more clash concious than rugby league , but then union was a grammar school sport in my schooldays , league was a secondary school sport , though a freind of mine hooked for yorkshire at ru whilst attending a secondary school . back in the 80's i played both codes , union on a saturday and league on a sunday , good fun it was , there was more predjudice against league from the union old boys , my league team mates werent bothered though . my union team was made up of accountants, farmers , prison officers ,even a milkman , the league team was made from builders , proccess workers even a hair dresser Surprised . in general more union players had been to uni/college than my league team mates . both damm fine sports to play though the social side of union was more advanced than league ,but league was a physicaly more demandng sport to play .

League is certainly a more demanding game to play. The fitness levels are far superior to Union as is the kicking game or certainly the kicking in open play. The only thing I will say about League is that having a Scrum is pointless and has been for years. You still do see some scrums lost against the feed in Union.

Couldn't believe how many South Aricans there were in Edinburgh, they'd all adopted a 'Scotch' accent too, amazing.

The amount of English who had suddenly developed an interest in a game called rugby was even more amazing.

There are far too many types like that at Nottingham uni, getting completely naked on the dancefloor when Baywatch was playing the night England beat France- justice was done last night though. Unfortunately the rah rah rugger bugger type of personality dominates the majority of sports clubs at uni from hockey to canoe polo.

You at Trent then TO? Could you ask the rugby league team why, Despite being highly regarded persistently sh*t out of a pre season freindly with us Cool

Our uni is dominated with rugby rah rah types. Expect of course the rugby league team. Casually get on with our job of being the best sports team in the university.

Our rugby league team is also rubbish.

Nah, Nottingham uni. I've got a mate from Surrey who used to play union (he isn't a toff or a rugger bugger hence he's my mate) but has started playing league and he loves it. As for rah rahs at a polytechnic? Had I gone to a public school and ended up at a poly, I'd be embarassed. Hallam are also quite good at Korfball btw.
