boring post but i need information!!
i am on the verge of accepting a job in Harrogate but i understand that the daily commute is nothing short of a nightmare.
i was wondering if anybody could shed any light on the time it would take to drive to harrogate town centre from clifton area?
also when is the best time to avoid traffic?
i looked into the train but at £38 for 5 days worth of tickets, unfortuntely for global warming, the car is cheaper!
any help would be appreciated...

When I've worked in Harrogate the commute has been no worse than anywhere else, avoid peek times 7.45 - 8.45 for the easiest journey obviously, not sure about parking as far as space is concerned but I know the Harrogate car parks cost a fraction of those in York.

You can get a monthly York-Harrogate pass alot cheaper. Go the station and have a word with them

I commuted to Leeds from Poppleton for four years and used that line every day. The York - Harrogate part takes about half an hour or just over - there are trains at 6.52, 7.57, 8.45 and 9.10 in the morning. On the way home, they run at 16.03, 17.08 and 18.05.
As for cost - maybe look at a monthly, six monthy or even yearly pass to make things cheaper. Also, do you get free parking at work, if not - that might be an issue.
The rolling stock is absolutely ancient and expect some overcrowding at peak times -although you should just about get a seat. Reliability is poor to average, although when the leaves on the line fiasco hits in October, its more like s***e to complete s***e! At other times its just about worth it, although with single line between Knaresboro and Poppleton, when things go wrong - its tends to huge delays as both directions are effected.
Only problem with the car commute is the York bypass to the A59 is just about the worst bit, then the A59 itself is slow. Finally, expect to queue into Harrogate itself at peak times, with things getting slow at or before HTFC footy ground on York Rd.
Hope this helps!

Absolutely. You also are then entitled to refunds or money off your next monthly ticket (or free extra days), if records show the service has fallen below certain standards. On top of this, you are getting 30 or 31 days travel, obviously more than the four separate weeks.

I have commuted to Panal (Leeds side of Harrogate) on and off for 15 years and on the days when the car is used it can take anywher between 35 minutes and 1 and a half hours depending on what time you set off from York.
The rail journey which I did for the majority of my commuting time is not bad in itself and should only take 35 minutes it's just that the York-Harrogate-Leeds line is very low on the scale of importance to the rail companies and I kid you not when I say that the train, especially back to York in an evening is late 8 out of 10 times. It maybe only by a couple of minutes but it annoys the hell out of me.
Just my two pence worth. |

thanks for all your help guys. i'm currently leaning towards driving, and will need my car for some days at work anyway.
i currently do York - Leeds rat race and averages about 50mins-1hr so anything that beats that is a bonus.
i'd be looking to set off from home about 7.40ish so fully expect some traffic, i have just heard stories of queueing for over an hour to get into h'gate itself.
merci beaucoup toute le monde

Bad luck Greg, I'm sure you'll get plenty more chances.
Who got it, a vegetarian, anti-car, muslim convert residing in Corwall?

Or maybe not, it would seem. Am in a very bad mood after today's result and Gordon's announcement.

I travel most days from near the Dormouse to near the Starbeck area of Harrogate. Usually takes about 25 - 30 minutes via the A59, setting off at 7.20am. Avoid setting off at 7.25am as you will get The Weaver Bird in a 1.4 Red Corsa coming out of Rawcliffe who decides he wants to overtake everyone and drive right up to your bumper.
You also have to keep your eyes on the trafic coming the other way, like, at least a dozen people on their mobile phones (who are they talking to at that time of the day?) and several white van men drinking mugs of tea from their flasks. The best laugh is you will also be passed by two or three police cars/vans driving to York, who are obviously not interested in pulling these morans over!
I usually leave the office 5-5.15pm, this usually takes another 5 minutes with a shortcut through Poppleton. If the road is blocked then I use the Wetherby road but this puts another 10-15mins to journey.
To be honest I find this commute quicker than if I was travelling to the other side of York. The only time it is a real pain is when The Great Yorkshire Show is on, it took me nearly 2 hours on one day last July. |

It's worth considering that Starbeck is very much on the York side of Harrogate and on a bad day Starbeck to Harrogate can be approx. 25/30 minutes.
It's comparable to saying to someone travelling to York centre that it takes however long to get to Acomb, whereas that would obviously not be the end of the journey. |

Just avoid Harrogate.
I have to travel there the odd time and hate it.
You will spend at least £38 a week on fuel & car maintenance, whilst sat in traffic jams full of "the country folk going into the smoke".
A59 along with the B1237.
Expect a 3 hour round trip commute by car on many occasion.

sounds just like my current journey to dirty leeds. however i have accepted the job so i will now swap one anger-inducing 5mph crawl for another similar 90 minute version. modern life eh?? bang goes my chances of getting home for neighbours.
