The start of the Red & Blue FC's season kicked off in good style as they entertained Kidderminster Harriers at the York University for their first game of the season.

The game started fairly even with both teams feeling each other out and everyone keen to passing the ball around to get that first touch. Despite not playing an 11 a-side game of football for about 6 months Red & Blue look fairly well organised. After a cagey opening first 10 minute spell Kiddy we're the first to take the advantage. A neat through ball from the edge of the box put in Harriers striker Dave Poutney who smashed in a low drive which was well saved by tommihird in goal, unluckily for the keeper the ball deflected back off the striker and looped into the net. 1-0 to the visitors.

However heads didn't go down and York were level within 4 minutes when Paddy pounced on a perfect in swinging cross from Hatchet Harry to bring it back to 1-1 with an excellent diving header.

The equaliser settled the home side down and following that goal Red & Blue started playing some nice passing football. KHIST were restricted to long balls down the flanks to their danger man Poutney who looked a real threat. Instead of converting possession into goals however it was an error from York’s keeper, tommihird, that let the visitors back into the game. A mazy run by Kiddy’s big centre half carved through the majority of the York midfield and a seemingly tame shot slipped through the hands of the number one. Despite it being a goalkeeping error the run was well deserved of a goal.

Just like before the Red & Blue boys showed more character and quickly squared up once again. The same result with Paddy pouncing on another excellent in swinging cross to score with his head. This time it was a deep free-kick from the right sent in by jhiggins.

York had the chance to take a 3-2 lead into half time when a screamer from jhiggins smashed against the underside of the bar Tony Yeboah style but found the wrong side of the line. That goal would have been special if we’d have only have had a Russian linesman! However it wasn’t to be and that chance was the last of a thoroughly entertaining first half.

Half-time; 2-2.

Red & Blue went into the second half much the same way with the hosts on the goal hunt. A counter attack launched by city_reject played in Paddy down the left who knocked long diagonal ball into new recruit tonyt's path, unfortunately the newbie dragged his strike just inches wide.

Great work rate and great football was surely going to pay off until jhiggins crazily punched the ball away in his own penalty box gifting the away team a chance to take the lead again from the spot. (Idiot!). The spot-kick was hammered in leaving Jason with his head in his hands rather than the ball!

I can’t remember exactly when it was but Kiddy hitman Dave Poutney had to come off injured after falling awkwardly (?) which really turned the game on it’s head. Previously Poutney had been the only outlet from defence for the visitors who used him to hold up the long balls to good effect. However without his presence upfront York we’re retaining possession every time the Harriers cleared their lines. Effectively it was wave after wave of York attacks from the moment he went off.

Unfortunately for the hosts finding the last pass then finish was a problem. Kiddy started to hold their line deep which prompted a barrage of long range shots from various City players to test the young keeper. But to his credit the youngster wasn’t beaten from range due to the combination of wayward shots and some good saves.

However his luck was to change when York and Paddy scored their deserved third on about 54 mins. Paddy was sent well clear by tonyt and with a bit of luck on the way he rounded the keeper to slot it home for his hat-trick and to make the game 3-3 with half an hour to play.

Cue more long range efforts from Woody Wilson, jhiggins and co, unfortunately none making the net bulge.

The last chance of the match fell to tonyt. Powerhouse Bobby D made a run out of midfield down the right wing beat the full back and flashed a cross in front of goal. Harriers keeper came to get a hand on the ball but the speed of the cross meant he only got fingertips, however they were just enough to ensure that the ball met the back of tonyt’s head instead of his forehead. The whistle literally went straight after that, meaning the chance may well have been a last minute winner. That’s sometimes how football goes…

Full-time; 3-3.

Game Summary

I thought it was a good first match for the Red & Blue Boys. First half was very much finding our feet again then second half we really took the game by the scruff of the neck, but wasted a lot of chances. Probably should of have won the game but credit to Kiddy they defended well against a fair bit of pressure.

Star men for Kiddy had to be striker Dave Poutney whose premature depature really turned the game on its head. Also the big guy (Dave Goody?) who started in centre defence but moved into their midfield. He had a strong game through-out until he also went off injured late on. (Must be something in the Northern Water?)

Thanks to the Kiddy team for coming down, it was an enjoyable day and hopefully they’ll fancy another match at there place (providing we don’t get lost again!).

Red & Blue NET FC’s MoTM

Has to be Paddy really. His hatrick was well taken but his all round play was also highly impressive, he pulled the strings in midfield for a large majority of the game. Well done Pad.
