Before we rewrite history can I point out that Newcastle's average attendance in ALL league games since 1888 is over 30,000. That covers good times and bad. Sunderland's average is under 25,000 in the same time.

What else would you expect from the self proclaimed "Loyalist" football supporters?

Although as has been mentioned before, the months before Keegan took over when Newcastle were sliding towards Division 3 (or league 1 as it is now) the gates were massively down - just like Manchester City's gates were massively down when they were in League 1 (or division 2 as it was then).

Man City's attendances massively down? They were regularly getting 30,000 or so at Maine Road, with the highest for a certain match at the end of the season.

Yes they got 30,000 around the end of the season - but in the middle of the season (November/December time) they were struggling and the crowds dipped further down. They picked up at the end of the season when they went on a good run to get themselves into the play-offs.

When we beat them 2-1 at BC I think that result took us above them in the league - which shows how far down they had fallen before the revived later on in the season.

At least they bothered to turn up unlike Newcastle!

But we still tried to book them 2 seasons on the trot.
