With the World Cup approaching, how do you think the team of present lines up against the 1966 Winners side of the 1986 team that go so close to beating Argentina without a "doubtful" goal from Maradona?

For me, if the 1966 side was to face the current side, of course the current side should win due to the players fitness levels compared to the earlier team!

COnsidering that we werent alive to see most of these teams play, it kind of buggers up the whole system.

So you can't have an opinion on something even though you did not see it?

Oh and...

This is not a "desperate plea" to become a Mod, I was only following the instructions posted on your earlier thread Wink

Have you ever seen the team play regulary, have you seen the players play.

You cannot judge the team when you have not seen a game or only seen one and compare them to thers as the greatest team the country has ever had.

And you think you can become a Mod with that Grammar? Wink

Back on topic, I've seen quite a few games of the 1966 team, not just the final. So I can get a good indication of what they are like.

Me, as on paper it is - we're talking best, not most successful.

It's exactly why the press get on their back because they've won nothing yet looking at the side we have a fantastic side.

Underachievers. That's the only way to describe the current squad. Agreed they are the best side on paper but like you said they haven't won anything so they cannot even be considered for the position of best england team IMO.

They win one game against the argies, then every closet football fan comes out and starts spouting s***e about how we're going to win the world cup. Are we f**k. We will do slightly well, maybe get to the semi's. Then crash and burn horribly(spl?) like we ALLWAYS do.

Got a feeling about this World Cup mind, without wanting to Jynx anything, but i was just going by what the question technically said, and i they are the best on paper.

We'll soon find out what they're made of anyway, this has always been the world cup where we were gonna peak - although I think it can be continued to at least the next world cup with the youngsters coming through.

I think England have their best chance of winning next year's World Cup.

A lot of the stronger teams like Italy, Spain, Argentina and France are going through sticky patches at the moment, although England have also had their own, so it could be a very open tournament.

However, Brazil beat UAE 8-0 the other day, I personally can't see England crushing anyone like that at the moment.

It might give them an extra incentive to do well knowing that they are playing in Germany and if they do better than the Krauts then they will embarress them totally! Maybe, just maybe they will do well next year and prove people like me wrong. I hope they do well and will be supporting them in every game they play, just they have done nothing to convince me to believe they are going to do anything else but fail over the past 6 months!

It's hard not to fail mind, when the only form of success is winning the whole thing.

I agree with Woody about this team being the best team on paper, I went for the 90 team though as I think Gazza's great Laughing

Tommi's right that we won't go beating teams like Brazil do 8-0, but I think on our day if we are defensively sound we can beat anyone. If Neville, Campbell and Ashley Cole play like they did in Portugal, and Terry becomes a leader like he is for Chelsea with Rio coming back into form I think we have the best defensive in the world. Hopefully this year both Beckham and Owen will be fit, as not both of them have for the past two major tournaments, and they play to their potential I think we will win. I think if Beckham and Owen are playing to their potential we will win the world cup. Rooney will always play well and Gerrard and Lampard will have bad games but are always solid.

Have any of you read Gazza's book? If not, read it. Quality read.
