AC Milan have completed the signing of Alberto Gilardino from Parma FC in a reported €24m transfer.
The 23-year-old Italy striker has put pen to paper on a contract running until June 2010. He told Milan's website: "It all excites me - the club, their history, the great players who are part of that. Why have I chosen Milan? Because they are the strongest club in Europe and it is a great honour to wear their shirt."
Gilardino has scored 23 goals in each of the last two Serie A seasons, having made his top-flight debut against Milan in 2000. |

Sorry, forgot, maybe I'll find a nice non-league transfer and post that instead.

Aye, myself and tommi have already had a discussion on this.
Good signing, personally I have never heard that much about him except in the newspapers quite recently, but with 23 goals in each of the last 2 seasons should be a quality signing.
Just a shame Parma have lost a big name player, as they did struggle last year.
Good on you tommi for posting this, I know many on here don't seem to find Italian footbal very interesting, but to be quite honest I encourage threads like this, people can learn and perhaps take more of an interest.

Right. The conversation you are referring to is dated back over a month ago, when there was not much speculation about him departing.
Parma didn't want to let him leave, but when the administrators came in, they took it out of the boards/mamanger's hands, and simply said that Gilardino should go to the club that put in the highest offer for him, in order to ease the financial situation at Parma. The clubs that orginally put the highest offers in for him were Fiorentina and AC Milan. However, Gilardino didn't want to go to Fiorentina, and so went to AC Milan instead.
So Nico, I am right. Parma didn't let him leave. The administrators did.

Are Parma now favourites for the drop? |

It said in the paper he has gone for 17.2 million quid. Lot of money. How much money do Parma owe then if they are in debt?. I take it the problem is pretty severe.

Not as severe as a club like Leeds. The debt is usually overblown because of the healthy financial state that they used to be in, but they are still £40-50m in debt.

Ah right tommi cheers for that. So will all the money from the sale of Gilardino go towards clearing the debt?. If so that still leaves a fairly hefty debt, more players to be sold?

So far this Summer, Parma have sold several key players, including:
-Cesare Bovo
-Domenico Morfeo
-Alberto Gilardino
.....and also Sebastien Frey has gone on loan.
This has brought in a fair amount of money, and Parma have already signed a GK to replace Frey, and have also signed Pasquale from Inter Milan who provides added quality in the defence.
It is true, that most f the money earned from the Gilardino sale will go towards clearing the debt, but the administrators are likely to provide in the region of £3-6m to spend on a new striker. The great thing about Parma though, is that they have one of the best youth setups in the world, and developed the likes of Mutu, Crespo, Adriano, Buffon and Chiesa in their early years(not all directly through the youth system, but they were signed at a young age, and then turned into world stars).
