SUMMER signing Steve Davis has been made York City's new club captain.

Davis, 35, will take over from Darren Edmondson, who was released at the end of last season and has since joined Chester City.

Last season's Player of the Year Darren Dunning will continue as vice-captain.

Player-boss Chris Brass said: "Steve has filled the role at other clubs and he's fully aware of what's required and what's expected of him. He has got a major part to play in the future both as a player and at the football club.

"From out first talks with him, he's done nothing but try and help myself and Lee Nogan. He will certainly be a leader on the pitch, which is something I feel we need.

"Before he came, I toyed with the idea of Darren Dunning and I am sure he will be ready for it in the future. He will also learn from what Steve Davis offers to the captaincy.

"He has leadership qualities himself at the young age of 23 and will still develop them. Steve will have a rapport with myself as manager and give me that gateway to the feeling in the dressing room.

"His loyalties will still fall on the side of the players and I am sure he will keep morale high."

Elsewhere, striker Andy Bishop is expected to put pen to paper and complete his move from Walsall this afternoon.

Former Blackpool defender Chris Clarke is also considering a contract offer.

City's long trip to Dagenham & Redbridge, scheduled for Saturday, September 4, has been switched to a midweek fixture because the original date clashes with a music festival.

The match will now take place three days later on Tuesday, September 7.
