York City boss Chris Brass believes his new strike pairing of Liam George and Jon Newby can fire his side to Division 3 safety.

George marked his first start since returning from injury with a goal and Brass believes that he and Newby could prove to be a formidable duo.

Brass said: "They deserved to get a winner. For the first time in ages we looked like scoring, every time we went forward we had them on the back foot.

"That gave us more space and because of that we looked like scoring."

He added: "We were looking for somebody to give us a spark and that set everybody else off.

"It was a good performance and has given everybody a lift. We showed fight and character and should have won."

George's goal was the first scored by the club in five games and although their winless run was extended to 15 games, Brass remains confident of beating the drop.

"We have five games left with three at home so we have got a good chance," he added.

"If we have the same level of performance as we had against Bury then we'll have no trouble.

"But that was only one game and we have to continue that."
