After the success in 1966 football fans flocked to football matches in the 1966/7 season, the hype made everyone interested in the game.
If England do win this time maybe many of the teams who are suffering because of the ITV digital farce will be given a lifeline (albeit maybe only a temporary one). That can only be good for the game in general at all levels.
If we win kids will probably want to play football (or even soccer!) more. Just look what happens when someone like Faldo wins a big golf tournament kids want to play golf, or Henman does well at Wimbledon, they want to play tennis. More kids playing and watching is the future of the game. I would rather see a team consisting of 9 or 10 English players with the odd import than the vice versa situation which is developing now.
The downside is the big boys will make more money. But if we and all the other "smaller" clubs get a fair share well everyone could benefit.
And also why I want them to win is cos I am a City fan and a football fan who really wants to enjoy success, at ALL levels!

Dave I think your enthusiasm and reasoning is admirable, but I really do wonder what will happen if England fail to deliver and are eliminated?
Having been away from home for a number of years I have had the opportunity to see a foreign media's assessment of things and no one in Australia really expects England to do anything much.
Most pundits are backing Argentina, Italy and France (but as outsiders!!!). Historically Spain have always failed to deliver but that may change this time. Also Portugal who from what I have seen have really been the form team in Europe during the last two years.
The big difference between England and the Spains, Italys, Frances and Argentinas is the huge gap that has opened up in terms of player skills and team philosophy. All the others have players in ALL positions who can play ANYWHERE...I seriously doubt that any of them would be worrying about the left side of their midfield, all they'd do is worry about their best starting eleven in terms of quality.
France have demonstrated this better than most, playing Thuram as a full back instead of a centre half, Wiltord up front and in midfield, and Desailly who was one of the best midfielders in Europe as a stopper. England just don't have the players with ability as Wes Brown clearly demonstrates.
I am honestly trying to be objective about this, if you are honest the 1966 team was not the best England team the 1970 side was far more talented but Ramsey's 4-4-2 made them sterile to watch.
Until the Keene saga I would have backed Ireland to do well, now I am not sure. But I honestly see England failing abjectly. I hope for you guys that they don't but be honest how good are they really?

After the disgusting behaviour of the FA today regarding Wimbledon, I've suddenly lost all the urges to support England (the team run by the FA) in the world cup.

Think England could do well, and the new boys, Cole, Bridge, Vassell could be surprise packages.

I agree with what alot of the press are saying today re: Heskey out...
Minutes per goal playing for England:
Vassell: 119 minutes per goal
Owen: 139
Fowler: 139
Sheringham: 195
HESKEY: 418 !!!
Just try and defend him Ben!!

How about playing 3 up front, Owen, Vassell and Fowler, those 3 have great pace.
Bit risky, but would be great to watch.
Don't think Sven will do it though.

Heskey doesnt have a marvelous scoring record for Liverpool either but it doesnt stop Houllier picking him.
What I have noticed when he plays for England is he really worries foreign defences with his power. Theyre not used to big geezers like him running at them. What is it they say about statistics? Regarding Vassell, its easy to have a great scoring record after only a handful of matches. Id go with Heskey!

At international level, it is not 'easy to have a great scoring record' full stop. I would use Vassell as a super-sub and if Owen wasn't fit he'd be a starter.

DeeUU, well I have to be optimistic! Hope they do win though if only for the bloody good piss up!
Agree with the postings re Vassells. He is a natural goalscorer. Last Sunday he just picked his spot and made it look so easy.
The world cup always does throw up a star and I have a feeling Vassell might be the one!
Incidentally Paul, stuff the FA if we do well it is for the fans NOT the gin and tonic brigade!

Yeah I do understand that Dave but come on guys be totally honest.
Will they be Rolls Royces or Reliant Robins?
After all we are always capable of being negative about City the team we love more than ANY other so come on give it a go, who will REALLY win the World Cup. I'll kick off Argentina or France.

Italy have got a lot to prove after their club sides' recent poor showing in Europe. Plus they have a resiliant defence and a fantastic front line. Totti is awesome.
France won't win it. That is my prediction. Based on, erm, er, gut feeling.
England will get out of the group stage placed 2nd behind Argentina but won't go any further.
Japan will get to the quarters.
Cameroon will get to the semis.
The final will feature Brazil, but they won't win.
Wait, I'm beginning to sound like Mystic Meg. *adopts weirdy voice* On Wednesday, a man with a foooootbaaaaall will kick it towards a neeeet and ruuuun away shouting goooooaaaal. Purple is his lucky coooolouuur. His dog is called Chiiiiiico.

I've always been the optimist, but now I'm being more of a realist.
I think Argentina and Italy will contest the final, with Portugal and France losing out in the semis. I think Turkey will get to the quarters just because they have an easy route there. I can see Cameroon doing well, and I also think both host nations will go through to the second round by virtue of being in quite easy groups (especially Japan's).
I can't see Ireland doing well. the climate will suit Cameroon who are a very under-rated side, and Germany always come good.
I think England have two or three quality players, four or five others that can cut it at this level, but also some liabilities. We'll miss Steven Gerrard greatly. He's the complete midfielder. And Gary Neville's absence makes the defence look vulnerable. Mills and Brown simply aren't adequate replacements, and Campball and Ferdinand seem more on edge without the experience and calming influence of Neville.
The genuine contenders for the cup have several outstanding performers. We have Beckham and Owen. Argentina have Ortega, veron, Batistuta, Crespo, Zanetti, Simeone. I think the Argies will win it. Italy are good, but I think they are lacking a play-maker in midfield.
That said, I'd love to see England do well and will cry when we inevitably bow out. Can't wait for the next 4 weeks. Whatever happens to the boys, they'll give us some fond memories I'm sure.
