York City 0 Macclesfield Town 1
Report by Carrie Stockdale
This tie was going to be a difficult one after knocking Macclesfield out of the same competition last season and with the opportunity of a home tie against Walsall in the 3rd round up for grabs both teams were bound to be up for it.
Team: Stockdale, Kamara, Anderson (c), Staley, Baynes, Arthur, Ashcroft, Webster, Stewart, Haw, Lyons. Subs: Reid, Foote, Green, Poole, Collins.
The first half saw York have the majority of the possession, the first York attack in the early minutes started with a midfield tackle by Haw, cross field ball picked up by Stewart who travelled well down to the by line cross to the far post, headed behind for a corner
Break by York, run down the right by Arthur, passed in to Webster, back to Lyons, who’s shot went just wide of the post.
The pressure continued with shots on target from Ashcroft, Haw, Lyons & Stewart to no avail.
Just before half time York were awarded a free kick which was taken by Staley, controlled well by Arthur who shot wide.
It seemed like there was not going to be a break for York and they went in at half time with no score.
Half Time 0 – 0
The second half brought more pressure for York with Macclesfield beginning to take control of the game.
York defended well and looked fairly strong at the back but were being forced further back toward the York goal.
A York Substitution in the 64th minute saw Andrew Green replacing Steven Baynes.
Within minutes of the change Macclesfield took their chance with Marvin McDonald scoring with a far post header from a corner to make the score 1-0.
York however were not beaten yet and attempted to level the score Stewart broke away down the left past two men but his shot was just wide of the post.
Another York substitution saw Leeon Poole replacing Steven Lyons.
Macclesfield held on the their lead and managed to secure a place in the 3rd Round.
Full Time 0 – 1
Unfortunately for the lads the old saying “It’s a game of two halves” came back to haunt them.
The work rate was high from all the lads and they were unfortunate that they just could not get the ball in the back of the net.
The Man of the Match was quite difficult with Adam Arthur having one of the best games I’ve seen him play this season, however I think that the one who was just above Adam was Nathan Kamara who seemed very comfortable in his full back role.
The YT’s are in action again on Saturday away to Scunthorpe(Brigg Town), 11am kick off.
