 |
|
Right, I've just last week bought my first IPod. Yes, I know, I'm WAY behind times, but I couldn't really ever afford one until recently.
I'm playing around with it, like you do with new toys, and have downloaded a bucket load of albums / random tracks etc.
I'm using Limewire for the solo tracks and Torrents for albums, putting them onto Itunes and onto my Pod from there.
But, the problem is, every time I connect the IPod, it updates automatically, sync's it and therefore anything I've deleted from Itunes / my P.C., is being deleted from my Pod.
Now, before I bought it someone mentioned that you have to store all the songs you want on your Ipod on your P.C. as well, which I thought was a wind-up, but, apparently not. (?)
I COULD do this, though I'd rather not, because, eventually it's going to make my P.C. run slow. (obviously).
Any IPod users know a way around this? Am I just being incredibly dense?
Is there no way around this?
Help me please, someone.
BTW: before someone says "read the manual" I can't - it didn't come with one (Amazon purchase).
And, before anyone else comes on to say "Shouldn't have bought an IPod, they're crap, all you've done there is pay for a name, should have got a..... blah blah blah", Yes, I paid for a name if you want to see it like that, but I've bought it and thats what I need help with, so if anyone can, it would be appreciated.

When your ipod is plugged into the computer, go onto iTunes, right-click on your ipod and look for preferences or something like that. From there, look for where it says 'Update iPod automatically' and 'Update iPod manually'. Click the manual box and it should work. You only have to drag the songs you want from the library into the iPod now. |

So, if I do that, then all the songs I've already got on my Pod will stay on there, even if they aren't still in the Itunes playlist and I sync it?
Just clarifying because I've spent the last 24 hours (I'm off work injured, not just bunking! ) putting music on there. If it goes now, I'm likely to commit suicide.

Unless it's really old PC or you've dowloaded tens of thousands of songs it can't make much difference to the performance, you can get massive external HDDs pretty cheap and smaller ones for even less.

Well, yeah, you're right. I mentioned I COULD leave them on there but I'd prefer not to to be honest. Just because I like my P.C. as "un-cluttered" as it can be really. But thanks TOTP.

I have mine set to manual install (mainly as it kept deleting the entire database and starting the 4000 odd songs again every time I plugged it in) but I now also don't have them stored on my computer, so yes they will stay on even if they're not on your iTunes.

I never have mine set to automatically rip CDs when you put them in, I use something calld Free Rip, which rips to mp3, and cost nowt! Then if I decide to get a different player the songs can go straight over, if you don't they're saved in an otherwise unuseable iPod format.

You can set it to rip as MP3s, not just AAC files.

You numpty.
You shouldn't have bought an IPod, they're crap, all you've done there is pay for a name, should have got a box standard MP3 player. Apple stuff is for people who think Paint is the Mac's version of Halo 3.

Also when you connect your ipod & the screen appears on Itunes to show that it is connected there is an option that you need to tick or not tick for automatically syncronising your ipod everytime you connect it.

Right, didn't expect this many replies to be honest and now I'm confused slightly.
the question is:
If I REMOVE a song, for example "The Killers - Mr. Brightside" from my ITunes database, then I added something which I wanted to go on my IPod, say "The Killers - Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine" and I "synced" the Ipod and the ITunes, then would the new song be added and the old one taken off?
Thats the question I'm really asking and I think it would, which would indicate that I DO have to leave all the songs I want on my IPod on my ITunes and P.C.
Am I right in that sense or wrong?

Yes you are right.
If you wanted to keep the track in iTunes, but not on your iPod, untick the track in iTunes - it will not get transferred across. I know because an albun I'd imported to iTunes somehow didn't have a tick against the tracks and I spent ages searching on the iPod for them

In one sense you are right and in another wrong. You are right to remove the Killers track but wrong to replace it with another one of their dreadful offerings, hope this helps

If you configure iTunes to allow you to manually update the iPod, then you don't need to keep copies of the songs in iTunes. However if you use this mechanism you will have to explicitly transfer everything to the iPod as and when you need to. Also track play-counts in your library don't get updated.
For automatic synchronisation you have to have all tracks in your iTunes library. You can either sync the entire iTunes library contents, or just certain playlists. Smart playlists make the later very usuable.

No, that doesn't help you pooshoot!!!!
Whats your problem with the Killers - they are absolute quality! I am very disillusioned with you TOTP. And feel sadly let down by you.
On a slightly more serious note, thanks all for your help - think I've pretty much got it sorted now. Didn't just want to jump straight in and wipe the entire b*****d IPod clean - which, to be honest, is the exact kind of ridiculous thing I'd do - there's a phrase for that, isn't there MD?!???

Right, I too am having Ipod related issues.
I have just got our lass an ipod nano for her birthday- yes, I know what a thoughtfull bloke I am- however I'm having a little difficulty.
I currently have a 30G ipod, and have an itunes account set up with tonnes of songs- many more than the 2G her ipod will allow. I'm also subscribed to podcasts which she wouldn't find of interest and would take up valuable space. So...
I've set up an alternative itunes account for her, but really can't face importing loads of CDs onto it- especially seeing as I've already imported them into my itunes account.
Does anyone know if there's an easy way to copy them from my itunes account into hers?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
