A big BIG must win match = Croatia looking good for one of the places we probably need to take 4 points from Russia in the 2 matches against them to qualify!!!

Another hilarious display from the plastic fans there in their JJB replica shirts.

'Who Are Ya' directed at the Russia fans. Well it's the biggest country in the world for a start.

'Stand Up for the England'. They'll be arrested soon for health and safety infringements.

Couldn't care less. I'm British, a Yorkshireman and, if I really have to admit it, English. For Euro 2008 I'm supporting N. Ireland/Scotland.

Seems to ge going well 2 -0 before 40 minutes, only one question remains unanswered: Lawrenson, why?

We all know a hypocrite, eh? I've even got it on in the background while I'm checking my emails.

I just don't feel any particular connection with the previously mentioned "JJB shirt" wearing, not-exactly-quality-football qualities that the England football team has come to represent.

Lost 2-1, a great effort but you have to ask yourself the question why the two best teams in the world are in the same qualifying group.

That said, it will be well funny when Ukraine win in Glasgow to wreck Scotland's chances and let France through the back door, especially after the Jocks have done the double over them.

A great result for both England and Scotland - England played extremely well against a good side - it's in our own hands now but there are still difficult games ahead - but on the last 2 performances really we should have a great chance of qualifying.

What a result for Scotland though - that must be one of the biggest upsets in world football over the last few years - Scotland doing the double over France. Hope they qualify now it would be good to see both England and Scotland there (now that will surprise Macca and Dynamo Kebab!!!! Very Happy )

U who Phil? I thought you advocated people from York supporting York City - should that not apply to people from England supporting England Wink

Well done to England, and especially to the following players:-

GARETH BARRY (My MOTM)

EMILE HESKEY & MICHAEL OWEN

And not forgetting:-

STEVE McCLAREN

It's so nice to see two consecutive efficient, composed, skilful and enjoyable performances from England. Apart from a 10/15 minute spell at the beginning of the second half tonight when Russia could/should have scored, we have bossed these crucial games. Barry and Heskey have seized their chances with aplomb and deserve to start the next competitive game barring injury. I am a big believer in that well-worn phrase 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

Heskey won numerous headers tonight and his link-up play with Owen was first class. It is evident that they have played together at club level and there is a great awareness of where the other player will be. Two class finishes from Owen who is getting fitter by the minute - Newcastle will surely benefit from his services at last!

Crouch, Lampard, Lennon, Neville (G) and even Rooney can warm the bench for the time being. The next big decision is..........

....will Beckham ever get into the starting XI again? Pace and stamina is ultimately a vital asset to any player at international level, and maybe, despite his brief recall by McClaren, he may not reach his target of 100 caps after all.

Those representing England (and McClaren) tonight deserve a show of faith. Put in the effort, skill and display the passion to wear the three-lions shirt and you will ultimately be rewarded.

One final conundrum: Phil Neville - why? Confused

Gareth Barry is continually excellent for club and country, the latter when he gets the chance.

Deserves a longer run in the team.

It's as I said before, we play well as a team when the so called 'big players' are out.

No doubt Rooney and Lampard will get straight back in, Gerrard out right to accomodate that f***ing Chelsea tart.

Show some balls McLaren and prove me wrong.

I think McClaren has been particularly lucky with injuries, and he's been forced into taking risks he wouldn't have taken otherwise- he always seems to choose the path of least resistance. I think, as you allude to above, the real test will come when Beckham & Fat Lampard are fit again. Will McClaren bite the bullet and choose Lampard or Gerrard, or will he try and keep everyone happy and end up upsetting everyone? I hope he picks the best team, rather than the players he thinks that people want him to pick.
In terms of Heskey, he didn't have much choice in terms of fit English strikers, and was forced down that route. I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank f*ck! Hopefully now he's seen how it works, he won't rush to slot Rooney into the team as soon as he's fit. I was encouraged that he didn't start Crouch ahead of Heskey at the first opportunity, he's cleared the first hurdle, let's see how he approaches the rest...

Funny that, I was sat next to a lad who has been to 40 countries watching England & he was shouting "who are ya" too.

Plastic he certainly isn't.

Glad you sat & watched it though. I thought you might have been in the Ukraine with the thousands of Italians having a 1980's jamboree?

I thought Heskey was immense. He battled away for 80 minutes and gave the Russian defenders a torrid time. I would also say that 70% of Heskeys flick ons went to Owen. It seems both Heskey and Owen have a real understanding.

Russia looked a good side but our defense at times looked soooooo shakey.

I saw enough of Russia last night to suggest they're going to be a real handful over in Moskva.

Surely the answer is to play the in-form players. (not hard to work that out really)

England under-perform so often because players are guarenteed a game and often just turn up rather than perform.
If we picked a team based on form we would have competition for places and players actually giving it everything to keep their place rather than many of the England squad that believe they merit a place on reputation. Crouch, Heskey and Owen should be battling for the two forward positions.
Rooney has to perform and prove that he is more of a talent than a liability.
I still think Heskey is a lump although he did a job last night with the crowd behind him, send him to Moscow however for the return game and think "rabbit caught in headlights" when chants against our black players kick in.

The significance of the last two games could well go beyond the 6 points. Hopefully its give the whole squad plus the injured players a massive kick up the ar*e and shows that no one is irreplacable.

For me against estonia I would go again with the same team, they are playing well and if Barry or Heskey were to be dropped after those performances I think it would send out completly the wrong messgae.

All that said in the short term the Heskey-Owen partnership can dig us out of our qualifying hole. However, if we want to have any hope at all of winning the big tournaments we need to find a way of getting our only world class talent playing well up front.

If they could find a decent striker they could have knocked a few in last night, a lot of their approach play was pretty tidy.

I think the important part of the night isn't just the win, it's the 3-0. Because I would be amazed if England got anything more than a draw out of the game in Moscow. However, if they can lose less than 3-0 then they will have the advantage should the two teams finish level on points.
