Abysmal.

Heard today that they are going to start "only putting SERIOUS criminals" in prisons because..................................... they're all full!!!

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard in my life.

They can't be serious can they? Evil or Very Mad

Cause and effect innit. Labour have been banging on for years about being "tough on crime" and jailing as many criminals as possible, and the point has been reached where there is no more capacity. Looks like they're going to have to start releasing some people early to make more space.

The finer points of whether it might be better in terms of rehabilitation to put a first time offender - say a shoplifter - on a community service order and/or mandatory drug addiction treatment programme or in jail gets lost in an attempt to sound tough in the tabloids (see Blunkett, Clarke, Straw....). They might wish the end but they haven't provided the means.

To be fair, I am led to believe this was always the case anyway - it's just that it's been mentioned in an official capacity again and the Conservatives (I think) have jumped on it! Rolling Eyes
I think the element Greg raises regarding rehabilitation etc. is the important aspect which is often neglected when dealing with criminals.

It is claimed that there are more prison spaces being created which will be available shortly.......although how they are being created is an interesting thought.......!

Almost as ridiculous as condoning the throwing of fireworks at football matches!

Turn it in FFS, it's getting boring discussing it in CC without ruining a thread in GC aswell. Rolling Eyes

I wont "turn it in" robdob. I have made no comment on the Halifax thread as I wasn't at the game.
What I will comment on though is some idiot condoning thuggish behaviour on one thread, then coming up with this thread the very next day.

I cannot see anywhere in the Halifax thread where Frid is 'condoning thuggish behaviour'. If you read one of his posts in the thread (the long one) then you'll see that he was not condoning the 'thuggish' behaviour

And the fireworks line in his post, i can only see that as being a typo, as after it he makes a comment saying that they could get us fined etc. etc.

Fireworks, erm, Dunno on that one, I can see why we're trying it.

If it's a typo it can be changed.

If not I rest my case!

Right, i'm not condoning anything. I said, I can see why were trying it. I say that because the Jorvik Reds (If that is who it was) whole purpose is to LIVEN THE ATMOSPHERE at City games. Fireworks would do that, certainly.

But, I don't think its the way forward. Which is why I said "Erm, dunno on that one" = because I know its not the right way of doing it and then "But I can see why were trying it" = because I can. They're just going about it the wrong way with fu**in fireworks.

So no, I'm not condoning anything. And thank you to the people that read my post and understood (roughly) what I was saying, although, it was late, i did "bugger off" after making the post and yes, maybe I didn't word it quite well enough.

I can't say categorically as I wasn't in attendance, however I'm pretty sure the bangers had nothing to do with the Jorvik Reds.

Frid, you're wrong.

No member of JR took any bangers into the ground at all.

I concur, no member of the Jorvik Reds would ever get banged...

Right. Nice one. So how does that make me wrong? I said "IF THAT IS WHO IT WAS" in my post. I never indicated that it WAS the JR's, just the way it looked from about twenty yards left of you Tommy, the fireworks came from the GENERAL VACINITY of JR members. Thats all.
