Check out the video lower on the page, which was taken as they went live to the helicopter filming it this morning. Pretty awesome.
It wasn't a meteor shower, it was the third stage of the recently launched Russian Soyuz launch vehicle re-entering and burning up, which launched the European spacecraft Corot. A normal event for expended stages of launch vehicles to re-enter and burn up.
Excuse the silly Fox commentary as they went live to the TV images of it burning up. |

As the pracle of all things space..when are the next launches due ? Posted to Tampa later this year for 6 months (beats Iraq !) and fancy a trip over to watch. Last time was there I saw the doomed shuttle taking off but only form outside my workplace in Tampa (impressive even from that distance). |

It happens as the object drops out of the vacuum of space and hits the atmosphere of the planet, called entry interface. Travelling at thousands of miles per hour effortlessly in space changes into a conflict between the object and the air/gas of the atmosphere, which builds up pressure and friction, which heats up the object.
This quickly builds up to thousands of degrees, and at the same time the object is hitting more air, which is "aerobraking" the object, seen by super bright plamsa trail. So the object is burning up and being ripped apart by aerobraking as it re-enters, before everything burns up into nothing. Larger objects (like asteroids etc) are too big in mass to break-up and burn up enough before coming out of re-entry (not good).
The Shuttle's get around this by way of its TPS (Thermal Protection System - the black tiles on the vehicle) - which is her heatshield and the "angle of attack", nose up, wings down at 30 degrees, actually using the aerobraking on purpose to slow down from 17,500 mph to come into the runway at 200 mph and land.

Here's an onboard video from Atlantis' mission last year (STS-115) showing the plasma flashes and fire of re-entry. They are literally riding through a fireball, all automatically 'driven' by Atlantis herself, with the crew protected by the heatshield. They only hit 2G, which is comfortable.

Soyuz is a different kettle of fish, as the Russian vehicle literally drops down through entry, with the heatshield on the bottom of the vehicle. They hit a lot of Gs, before paracutes deploy and they drop down for landing.
