As City fans, surely there must be a time when your ALMOST ashamed to say it outloud to strangers.
It doesnt happen very often, but certain times (December 26 / 27th 2004, anyone?) make it so that i am. Most people though say something along the lines of "oh, thats a bit unusual" you tell them why and they have nowt but respect for your loyalty and the expense you go to to see a team which is struggling to get back into the league.
However, theres always one response that gets right up my nose. For example;
I had a conversation with a new lass at work today (who's incredibly good looking so i had no chance anyway but if i had have had a chance, it would have ruined it!!!). She was doing the whole, "get to know her colleagues thing" and said, what are you into, what gets you passionate.
I told her injustice, football, music etc etc... However, when i said football, she looked at the City rainjacket i was wearing because in case it pisses down and says "how can you possibly get passionate about football when you support Leeds or whoever"
My response was "when you have the decency to learn which team it is that i ACTUALLY support then you can draw me into your arguments" and attempted to not look annoyed by it. But i was feckin livid. Petty to be livid maybe, but it bugs me. I asked her who she supported and she replied "Frank Lampard" which turned me a little bit
Anyway, thats probably the worst response i've ever had from someone when they've found out i'm a city fan. And i dont think there can be MANY worse.

What pisses me off is when they turn round and say they used to watch city ,claim to be a fan and it turns out the last game was against Arsenal and know fck all about what has gone one in recent years.

i work in leeds area and when i am asked who i support, people tend to assume that i support the scum. when i tell them the truth their faces don't know what to do with the muscles that control them. it's usually followed by: "what division are they in? whats the crowds like...a few hundred?"

But I bet that many of these occasional City fans stuck money in buckets (when we needed it) and came to the big games when City played the likes of Fulham. Let's not get so pompous about occasional supporters We need them otherwise what is the point in everybody saying I hope we draw so and so in the cup we will get a decent crowd.
Remember we are a conference team with no more pulling power than about 2000 regular supporters (which is actually more than we deserve for the league and the performances) - a few years ago we had similar crowds for 4th division matches and when we got better and moved up the league we had 5 no 6 thousand regular supporters - which sorta proves these people who only come to the games ARE supporters but those who come along to the games when times are bad (ie now) are the hard core supporters (or the ones who need their heads testing ). It happens with every team so don't get so hung up about it!

"If York City is so good why did the fans give it away for nothing?" irks me sometimes...

Stupid women.
My flatmate from last year, not a woman, failed to comprehend how I could care about my team as much as he did (a Spurs fan from Macc who never goes to any games) because we were so low down the leagues and said it wasn't "proper football". And he stole my orange juice. |

Always enjoy telling people I support City, it kind of gives you a "proper fan" badge of honour. In some ways it must be harder being a lifelong (and Mancunnian) Man Utd fan - always having to explain that you have NOT jumped on the glory band wagon.
Anyone you speak to who does not see it like that, is probably not worth the wasted breath anyway..... |

I work in a lot of primary schools and the kids always ask which football team I support. My first answer is always "City, of course!" I then get the usual "Manchester, Bradford, can't think of any others!"
I then tell them that the first letter of the team is the same as the last; eventually someone will shout out 'York City'.
Most of them think it's really cool, cos they're not a Premiership side, and they actually start looking out for the results. I tell them to go away and find things out about YCFC.
Most Monday mornings are spent spending some time talking about how well/poorly we've done over the weekend.
They haven't started buying scarves or anything yet, but at least they are more aware about us. Perhaps I've sown a little seed?

Yeah, all my actual mates who arent City fans (all over here in wankyshire) are normally Bolton, Man U, Man C or Liverpool. But, since theyve known me, they always look out for our results. Some of em have even come along to games with me "just to experience it" and have had a good time (mainly for the piss up afterwards) but thats what i was saying about "generally people respect you for it" that is a great feeling that.
And i understand that "BADGE OF HONOUR" thing from earlier in the post. It feels so good, not selling out and Jumping on Man U's bandwagon ten years ago, which would have been a whole lot easier because the large partion of people in Wigan / Bolton support man u.
I may have got the occasional beating up from Man U and Wigan (when we were in same division) fans for wearing a City shirt*** but I dont care cuz i can say i do it, do it, and will always be York City Till I Die!!!
*** = i'm not playing either, that actually did happen on the odd occasion - sad as that is at 9 / 10 years old.

One Saturday after following City away I 'bumped' in to some Newcastle fans in a pub back in York and had a *Very* heated argument along the same lines.
My (p*ss*d up) argument was that it must take more commitment to follow a crap lower league team home and away, stay loyal, and risk ridicule by other 'fans' than it is to follow a top team......
....they disagreed.
Newcastle, loyalist supporters in the country.......my ar*e.

On one particular occasion I wandered into the Strawberry in Newcastle for a couple of drinks and had barely ordered my pint and turned round at the bar with a couple of mates when a large number of locals approached us to enquire as to the team who's shirt I was wearing (this was years back and it was one of those horrible Bachelor-style shirts).
On informing the natives that it was a York City shirt the atmosphere in the pub lightened considerably and they explained to me that they thought it was a Sunderland shirt and were planning to take appropraite action had it been so.
Never ashamed to say I'm a York fan though - most of the people I have told keep coming up to ask about the season/last matches and lots of people at my new work now look out for the City results and for them in the news. |

I tell everyone here i support york to a huge array of blank faces. I have to explain what division we are in and why I support them. Then comes the dreaded question. 'Who do you support in the Premiership?' They can't comprehend the fact I only support York and only watch the Prem when there is a juicy game on. I get respect, pity and bemusement all in one.

When City were robbed of victory at Anfield by a dodgy ref's decision, I got a couple of very different reactions form the Liverpool fans I met up with after the game in one of their pubs.
1) There were several pints waiting for me, bought by Liverpool fans, embarrassed by the fact they'd "won" and the way they did it.
2) A stupid fecker sitting at the next table then started wittering on about how they couldn't understand anyone supporting a team that never wins anything, and how dreadful it must be to have nothing more to look forward to than travelling to get beat at the likes of Exeter, etc, etc. |

I suspect he just skimmed through the non-league newspaper. It only has to pass your eyes once to remember league positions.

Doing Yorkie at events such as school fete's , etc , we get the usual crap from kids ( usually wearing Leeds shirts funnily enough ) giving it "York City are crap" as if I should be really offended by it . Really ? I thought we were bloody magnificant , Premier League material and all that....
The other thing , and this really boils my pi$$ ( Ive ranted about it enough times to fellow forum members ) are these Man United, Liverpool , etc fans who proclaim to be the greatest supporters in mankind . I've lost count of the amount of times Ive been in the pub and listen to some ar$e giving it :
"I'm the biggest Man Utd fan there is me , no-one bigger or better, I'd die for that team, biggest fan in the world, for 25 years....."
To which I'll reply
" So do you get down to Old Traffod very often then?"
" Oh , well I've never been BUT......"
The usual bollocks excuses then come out including the old favourites :
1) I cant get tickets
Cant get tickets? Champions League tickets for Man Utd are a piece of pi$$ to get hold of . And I'm sure if they were the 'huge' fans they made out they'd go to lengths to get hold of them .
2) I cant afford it
But you can afford to sit here all day, smoking tabs and sinking about 15 pints of lager at £2.50 a pop.
One of these offending culprits drinks in the Exi quite a lot and is literally only capable of two topics of conversation : David Beckham and what a supreme Manchester United fan she is . A few months back she was stood at the bar declaring to anyone who'd listen
" The 1999 Manchester United team that won the treble were the greatest Man Utd team of all time . Bar none "
To this I replied , 'Fair do's , but what about the Busby Babes' ?
"Who?"
I had laugh . Massive Man Utd fan? Oh yes! I'm going to stop there otherwise this could turn into a very lengthy rant !

There is one team and one set of fans who I totally detest:
MANCHESTER USHITED.
Personally I have never been ashamed to admit I am a City fan and I find that I usually get a good reaction from fair minded armchair football supporters - who either pity or admire my loyalty to my home City football club!

Dave don't you remember those lovable scousers running us all through town in 77 after Keegan took a dive in the 87th minute. Same tw@ts that lobbed rocks at our buses after we'd copped a 7-0 hiding at Anfield in 86...
I just love hearing that Liverpool fans are the best in the world...best c***s more like...

Remember both well dee, though to be honest Keegen didn't dive - although he was fouled outside the penalty area.
I was on the bus that the wankers bricked on the dual carriageway, fecking freezing ride home & the coppers wouldn't let us in the services for a warm!

A sure sign that I'm getting old.
I just remember that b*****d Alec Lindsay's jammy penalty that hit both posts and that miserable rain in the floodlights.
