Oh dear.
Quote: |
The Sussex FA are investigating GSK Phoenix after they held a minute's silence before their away clash against Ifield Edwards for a player who had not died.
The rival team expressed outrage at the "sick joke" played by GSK Phoenix, who went on to win the game 3-2. The Ifield team accused GSK of pulling a deliberate stunt to put them off. "Several of our squad knew the so-called deceased player well. We came out of the dressing room completely shocked," said Jamie Mills of Ifield.
"We observed the minute's silence and we noticed that several of the Phoenix players didn't exactly look sombre. It wasn't until the end that we found out that he had not died". Mills said they were told that GSK had merely dropped the player from their first team for the first time in a number of years.
The GSK squad have been reported to the Sussex Football Association by referee Richard Smallwood, and the Saturday league team may be punished for bringing the game into disrepute.
Neither side was prepared to name the "dead" player. |

Bloody hell, if you can't have a joke now and then, it's a pretty stupid world.

Yeah hilarious. Perhaps it was just a joke that backfired and the reaction is maybe a bit strong.
However
And before I get accused of missing the "joke" When tragic events happen like Matt Gadsby it unites Football and people go out of their way to show support and solidarity. In light of his recent death this IMO was a bit "sick" and you would think the players would know better.
We had a case a couple of seasons ago of a player who played for Tamworth last season of lying about his daughter having Leukemia. Of course everyone was moved and raised loads of money because that is what we do.

I have to agree with Tony on this one.
When I originally read the article I was shocked by it and when I posted it on here I wasn't expecting it to be greeted with the hilarity it was (although the inclusion of the line “Neither side was prepared to name the ‘dead’ player.” doesn’t help the seriousness of the piece).
At best the 'joke' was incredibly ill judged, particularly in light of the recent events, and personally I hope they are charged by the Sussex FA.

When preople start giving money, then prhaps it becomes a serious matter, conning people out of things. Why can't people just lighten up and see it as a joke though FFS. No wonder half of you are always whingeing, have a bit of fun once in a while.

People perhaps wouldn't feel the need to take the piss out of minute silence's if they were handed out rather inappropriately. No one likes the fact that two young girls in Soham who supported Manchester United died, at all, but why all League fixtures the following weekend had minute silences completely confuses me.

Whereas in complete contrast...
BBC Website wrote: |
Luton defender Davis has stroke
Luton Town boss Mike Newell has revealed that Hatters defender Sol Davis suffered a stroke on Saturday.
Davis, 27, had the stroke on the Luton team coach on the way to Sunday's game at Ipswich and is in a specialist unit at Cambridge's Addenbrookes Hospital.
Newell said: "Sol has made a bit of an improvement but he lost feeling in his left side and it has affected his speech. He has had an MRI scan.
"It might take six months before he makes a complete recovery."
Newell was speaking after his side's 5-0 defeat at Portman Road.
Davis suffered the stroke soon after he and his team-mates left Luton on Saturday to travel to Ipswich.
"We have kept quiet until now but that puts everything into perspective," added Newell. "I don't want distorted reports or sensationalism.
"Although we are not making excuses for our performance, our thoughts are all with Sol. I am not sure if that has had an effect on the players but it cannot really have helped."
Ipswich boss Jim Magilton wished Davis a speedy recovery and said: "I had no idea what had happened before the game."
Davis moved to Luton from Swindon for Ł60,000 in 2002 and has made over 150 appearances for the Hatters.

A minutes silence should only be used to mark the passing away of former players/club officials of the 2 teams playing the game and on exceptional circumstances well respected English international players. ie Bobby Charlton etc.

Yep, totally agree. But then again there's a fine line, I felt a minute's silence for 9/11 was relevant - but the one marking the anniversaries wasn't.

Not much she can't be blamed for IMHO
In fairness, she got us used to grieving as a nation. Now, everytime someone in the public eye so much as sprains an ankle, everyone queues up to sign a book of condolence and leave flowers. Richard Hammond is a case in point- no doubt there'd have had a minute's silence if he'd have shuffled off his mortal coil

To be the Devil's Advocate, his accident had occurred near York - would have given the YEP something to use as an excuse for their sixteen page obiturary if that had have happened.

I would include ex England Managers and Wel Respected players not just from England in that and in this "case" that was true. The opposing players thought that one of the oppositions Teamates had died. As South Coast said at best in poor taste or a sick joke given what has happened in the past and so soon after Matt Gadsby passed away.
Don't know why Diana/Soham victims gets dragged into this. These players were not making some kind of statement they were either stupid/sick or badly advised. Hope the FA throw the book at them.

I'd love to but I'm still busy holding a silence for Robert Blum, a German revolutionary, who was executed in Vienna on 9th November 1848.

If he was that much of a mate to them, surely they would have been too traumatised to go out and play their game?

It's good, but it's not right.
As an update to the original story the local press down here are reporting that GSK Phoenix has now been charged with bringing the game into disrepute with the Sussex FA saying GSK Phoenix's actions were "disrespectful to individuals in football that have passed away".
GSK Phoenix has refused to comment and could now face a fine or a suspension.
