Re: Young Yorkies in "City Chat" and "General Chat"

Laurence and I have both tried - unsuccessfully - to curb the posting habits of some Young Yorkies in other parts of the forum.

As there's been no noticable change, we'll soon be restricting some people to the Young Yorkies part of the forum.

If I knew how to do it, I'd do it now. But I don't, so it'll have to wait to Laurence to next log in

I hope this'll reduce (1) the amount of dross in City Chat (2) the amount of agro received by those Young Yorkies and (3) the amount of agro received by me.

Matthew

Good plan. Glad to see something is being done.

Good plan, seconded, hopefully some normality can return to this forum. Whats the posting limit 1 or 2? 3 Would be just too many. As someone else somewhere else once said now we have 2 poor forums instead of 1 great one.

Anything to stop the tittle tattle drivel that is posted endlessly ruining many threads

Just close the offenders accounts.

Dross in CC = Dross in GC = Dross in YY = Dross on this Forum.

Very often the simplest and easiest solution is the best one.

IP addresses can be blocked on this forum, too. But some people have many IP addresses, and some IP addresses belong to many people, so it is not a very good way of achieving a ban.

Maybe we need to accept the decision of the Administrators and see how it pans out from there. I am willing to see how this solution works before calling for out and out bans.

With an un-modded phpBB board I don't believe that this can easily be done. You can set a section to restricted, but the downside is that users don't have access by default. A few changes to the board software could fix this, though. I run another board running the same software, so I know what I'm on about.

Ban them for good - it works! You can't easily ban based on IP address due to various issues. Most IP addresses via DSL and dial-up accounts are transient, so they change on every reboot. Others may be the IP address of a proxy server, so banning that IP will ban all users of the same ISP. They're only effective if the person concerned always posts from the same work IP address.

I know it can be done because it's done before. As soon as we speak to Laurence, we'll be on the case.

I couldn't find anything to do that, but my admin knowledge is limited.

True. It'd work in some cases, but by no means all. (For example, I post from two fixed IP addresses, so could be easily banned)

Banning people for good doesn't stop them re-registering, as we've seen time and time again with The Idiot Batchelor.

Yes, people have been restricted before, but I don't know whether the forum itself was used to enforce the ban.

It could be that we have to tell those posters "Do not post in City Chat. The moderators will delete without warning all posts they find".

Have you got obsessive compulsive disorder or something? Are you not in control of your hands at the keyboard? Youre asking someone to delete your account. Why not just stop posting these messages that irritate people?? Show some self control!

I think that you are close to the truth, there.
