Street football takes centre stage
Tuesday, 19 July 2005
The Homeless World Cup (HWC), a global street football tournament involving 32 teams of homeless people from around the world, has returned for its third edition.
Third year
Following the huge success of the event in Austria 2003 and Sweden 2004, the 2005 finals will be played in Scotland. The competition has seen increased team entries, spectators, exposure and support. At least 50,000 spectators are expected in the streets of Edinburgh from tomorrow until 24 July.
Annual UEFA cheque
Street football is a fast growing, fast paced, highly competitive and dynamic sport, and UEFA has lent its support. European football's governing body has awarded its annual CHF1m (€649,000) charity cheque to HWC organisers ProPoor Sports to help them promote street football.
Impact report
The 2004 HWC Impact Report reveals that street football's powerful and positive effect is significantly transforming lives around the globe as the following results show:
• 90 per cent of people said it had a positive impact on their lives
• 74 per cent were making significant changes in their lives as a direct result of their involvement
• many found regular employment
• nearly half improved their housing situation
• over a third pursued education
• half came off drugs and alcohol
• the majority of players continue to play football after the Homeless World Cup and 16 players have even been signed professionally or semi-professionally in a playing or coaching capacity by football clubs
'Simply astounding'
"The results to date have been simply astounding in terms of changing lives and changing perceptions," said HWC co-founder Mel Young. "Football is a great leveller, it connects people and is a grassroots sport for everyone. The Homeless World Cup is able to change the scenery, challenge stereotyping and people who have been spat at the week before are cheered by thousands and treated as soccer heroes during the tournament." |

It's a load of bollocks (not the story, that is true). Africa have been refused entry to this because they are "too poor" to support themselves whilst in the U.K. What a load of s***e. |
