York City caretaker boss Viv Busby faces his toughest task to date with the visit of high flying Carlisle. The City gaffer will be aware that City need to curve their losing streak with a decisive home win against the Cumbrians.
Busby was dealt a major blow with the news of Darren Dunning’s 1 match suspension after receiving his 5 yellow card of the season last Saturday during the 1-0 defeat at Woking. Dunning’s presence in the middle of the park will be sorely missed his battling displays have earned him praise from opposition players and fans.
In other injury news; Gary Pearson faces a late evaluation on his troublesome shoulder and will be 50/50 on whether he will be match fit, a run out in Wednesday’s reserve match against Boston may be the only way he will make the Carlisle game. Experienced defensive duo Shaun Smith and Steve Davis are not expected to contend a place as both are slowly recovering from their Back and Hip injuries respectively. Young Matthew Coad is also a recent addition to the injury list as he is suffering from a bad groin. The injury has come at a bad time as the creative midfielder has recently broke into the first team and was looking at an extended stay to try and force his way into regular action. Upfront impressive striker Paul Robinson is suffering with a hamstring problem that will keep him out until Christmas.
Boss Viv Busby announced that he thought the game against Woking has "stopped the rot a little bit” and he will be praying that City maintain this upsurge in form against Carlisle.
Carlisle Untied return to league action after having had more cup outing during the last 5 games than they have had Conference games. The omens are good for the Cumbrians as aside from the pleasant distraction of their cup runs they have been producing impressive results in all their league matches.
Simpson’s boy’s marched into the second round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night brushing aside League Two outfit Bristol Rovers after extra time. They score was 1-0 the goal courtesy of Brazilian striker Hugo Vieira’s late header.
Boss Paul Simpson will be salivating at the thought of releasing his new striking prodigy on the leaky City defence having been unable to play him in the two sides last meeting. Marco Vieira, a loanee from Wigan, has been tearing apart almost every defence he has played against while in the blue of Carlisle. The 19-year-old has already amassed 7 goals in 16 games for his adopted club, the same amount as ALL of the City front men combined. His willingness to run at opposition defences will mean Brass and co with need to pay him special attention if they are going to stifle the Carlisle attack.
Old team mates will meet up again with Tom Cowan returning to Bootham Crescent after being released at the end of the 2002/03 season for financial reasons. Cowan seems to have found his feet since leaving City and has now established himself in the Carlisle team and is reported to be a firm fans favourite with “his skill on the ball and committed performances”. He will no doubt be given a ‘warm’ welcome by the Longhurst faithful.
