I think its a bit of a shame, aside from the last few years he's been one of the best performers in an england shirt and always a player that managers would tell players to watch carefully.

Though with Gerrard and Lampard improving he may have started to find it a little harder to get into the team.

He has been sh*t for the past few years, it all went down hill since his two goals against Scotland. Euro 2004 was a mess with him out on the left, Sven would have kept picking him even if he did play out of position.

Lampard is a better player than Scholes.

going gracefully me reckons, think its clear that its now

beckham, gerrard, lampard and a left sided player*

owen rooney

so no place in midfield, or behind a lone attacker.

*scholes is not a left sided player.

If you ask me you should dump Beckham as well. Wright-Phillips or Dyer should be given a crack down the right.

Personally I would put Wayne Bridge there.

Agreed. I said from day one that he is/would be a pathetic captain, however I think he does deserve a place in the starting 11. After the Euro 2004 shambles I think he should be given some competition, no one player is bigger than the team.

Me!

And my son!

BTW if it hadn't been for Scholes Scotland would have been at Euro 2000 instead of England! Evil or Very Mad

Lots of inexperienced young views here, so to speak.

Scholes was and is a class player. Perhaps he has underperformed recently, but you can't take away his endless list of winners medals. Only class players can achieve what Scholes has achieved.

Personally, while I respect him as a footballer, he must be a right nob as a bloke if he doesn't want to play in Germany 2006 - there is not a single game he has or will ever play for Man United that is as big as a game in the World Cup for your country. I think someone has been giving him bad advice.

The "Hand of Fergie" is in this.

In this months World Football he is interviewed and asked about Scholes form. He said he didn't know if Scholes was being affected by too many games, but that it was possible.
He goes on to say that once he got Scholes back in training, he'd be sitting down and having a chat with him to see what could be done.

It's a real loss. The guy has some very rare qualities and he will be missed.

From reading what Sven said it's a case of going before the press ask why he hasn't been picked.
Seen some fantastic matches abroad with Scholes in the side. 2 years ago I would have said no, but think he just hasn't got the same spark anymore.
Just as long as we aren't palmed off with Neville Sad

I'm disappointed at this, and also suspect the Hand of Fergie. One of the few players of world class in the England squad in the last few years. We'll miss him.

What does it matter if the poster is young? Does that mean they are unable to make a judgement on a player?

My view on Scholes is that there is no place for him in the England team anyway at the moment. Lampard and Gerrard are the two best central midfielders currently, and how I see it I think a natural left footer such as Bridge should be brought in to play at left midfield to give us natural width down that side.

He WAS a good player a few years ago for England, but for whatever reason his form has deteriorated, and for an attacking midfielder his goals to games ratio was poor in the last few years. A braver manager would have dropped him from the England set up ages ago.

A hell of a lot more than you would think Wink

Anyway, just wish Fergie would retire now.

No but the view must be questionable if it is based only on recent experiences. Phil only mentioned that they were 'in-experienced' viewpoints, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Midfields containing the likes of Andy Sinton and Carlton Palmer are not that long ago you know. It's called perspective.

I Agree with Phil PMG - maybe Phil means the young people who are commenting cannot make an informed judgement on Scholes.

In the same way I have no idea about conference football but a kid of 15 or 16 who has been watching conference football for a few years would be able to make a better informed judgement on who was going to win the conference than me.

It is ageism in reverse! Very Happy

I still believe that Scholes isn't good enough to be first choice anyway - Lampard and Gerrard are the two best English centre midfielders at the moment, and to try to give the team a bit of balance a more natural wide player should be given a chance (I think Cole for example would do a great job at left midfield for England with Bridge as full back).

No one is arguing that Scholes is useless - just saying that there are better alternatives.

Yes, if you are not old enough to have followed his career from start to finish.

That's why I wouldn't offered ill-informed views on Kevin Keegan's career as a player because I only remember the end of it when he played for Newcastle United.

As AD says, it depends on your experiences. The difference is that "young" people tend to think that their half-cocked views should be respected for the sake of it. If you don't really know, don't claim you do.
