As a potential York Minstermen moneyspinner, would anyone be interested in joining a coach trip to a night's greyhound racing, probably at Belle Vue (Manchester)? If so, just post a reply to this thread - don't pm me yet.

With a coachload of us paying £25, we could make up to £500 profit for the Trust.

The price would include travel, entry to the track, two pints of beer or lager, a basket meal and a free bet with the Tote.

I've no particular dates in mind yet, just trying to gauge interest.

Hopefully it's the sort of event where we can extract money from non-City fans even faster than we can take it from ourselves.

Great idea Frank - I'm always up for a novel way of throwing money away, especially if it benefits City - count me in.

There are loads of dog tracks nearer to York than Manchester which may increase numbers - Sheffield and Hell spring to mind.

Definitely interested.

Owlerton in Sheffield is a good one, but I'll be up for the trip to Planet Manc!

I reckon a few of my "gambling addicted" mates would be interested!

The actual venue will bear further investigation.

I suggested Belle Vue because of the excellent night out I had there a couple of weeks ago. The deal we got meant they were effectively paying us about £4.50 each to go there...

...although by the end of the night, our beer consumption more than compensated for that.

It may well be that by tempting them with the prospect of 50 generous Yorkshiremen and women, we can get an even better deal.

I've done a little investigation and Sunderland would appear to be a very good alternative. Sheffield seems a bit unwilling to actually name prices, but I'm sure the information would be forthcoming.

Other near-ish tracks like Hell, don't seem as good, but again if someone knows different, please let us know and we can look into it.

What would the "basket meal" consist of? It does sound good value depending on the food served and the size of the portions.

When I went the other week, I had scampi and chips, which would have cost me £3.50. The quality was OK, the quantity was such that I couldn't eat all my chips.

There was a variety of meals on offer. The "basket" was actually a sort of polystyrene suitcase.

HHhhmmmm, I'm still sceptical. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being delicious and 1 terrible, how was the scampi? How many chips, roughly, did you leave?

Would it be possible to co-incide a night @ the dogs with a City away game? Have the YMM considered a 'weekender' anywhere?

5/10 for the scampi. Sorry, didn't count the left over chips, but the fact that I couldn't manage them all will tell most people that this was a sizeable portion Wink

The main aim is to raise a bit extra cash, hopefully targetting people who don't necessarily support City, and I doubt whether a City-trip-cum-greyhounds-night would attract the same level of support or make the same money. I'd see it as something for midweek, close season, or a Saturday when City aren't playing.

If there was sufficient support to do both in one day, we'd have to bear in mind that ideally you should be at the dog track for 6.30ish which doesn't leave much time to get to a track from most football grounds.

We're still playing around with ideas, though, so all suggestions are welcome.

As for a weekender, Exeter on December 4th has been suggested as a possibility, allowing City fans the traditional weekend in Paignton. Nothing's been decided, though, and it'll depend on the general level of support for our excursions.

I think AMC is right to be cautious, there simply isn't enough detail there, Frank.

These chips-are they the fat, traditional British chip shop chips, or thin french fry style crap? Are they fried to a crisp golden brown or are they that processed yellow colour?

And the scampi, what's the batter like? Crunchy, soggy or what?

Come on Frank, give us the information we need.

Traditionally fat, greasy and soggy. The colour was a little difficult to determine in the soft smokey light of the bar.

Mostly soggy, but with a hint of crunchiness and a delicate fishy bouquet.

Try this link for Sheffield, http://www.trap6.com/stadium/sheffield.htm, the site is currently under reconstruction but once completed shows details of prices, menues, corporate events etc.
I've taken a group of my staff there & we had a top night for about a tenner each (entrance, food, free pint & free bet!). needless to say the extra beer & stake money added to the bill considerably!
I'll be interested, subject to work commitments.
