Hey, we ain't out of it yet!!!!
We played really well last night. Can't believe we lost (serves me right for saying that ZZ was passed it before kick-off ).
Having watched all 4 games, I reckon we have been the best team so far. If we go through, we will play one of the group A teams in the quarters, and not one of those four teams showed anything that we will be fearful of.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!! |

We can do a lot better though. I thought we were a bit too defensive in the second half and in the end paid the penalty for it.
First half was pretty even I thought, perhaps England slightly deserved their lead, but the second half was totally dominated by the French.
The Croatians and Swiss didn't look that good, no reason why if we attack we can't get 6 points out of those games.

And I thought that snatching defeat from the jaws of victory was purely a Scottish phenomenon!
Seriously though, I thought James was blameless, the back four were magnificent, the midfield, Lampard excepted, (and what a magnificent header from him!) conceded the entire area up to 25 yards out to the French and failed to compete.
Owen was a major disappointment and deserved to be substituted, and Rooney had a great game and was still troubling the French defence when he was substituted (why?) by that useless donkey Heskey.
If Beckham’s penalty had gone in then that was it, game over, but when Barthez pulled off that save you could see doubt creeping in.
Great free kick from Zidane (caused by a needless Heskey foul) followed up by a perfect penalty.
I really feel sorry for England’s defence, they didn’t deserve that.
Never mind there's Thursday to look forward to against Switzerland (my team in the sweep, so divided loyalties, hell no, money wins every time!)

A tale of two penalties.
How many times have we heard that expression in relation to England.
I can't see any reason why we can't still go through particularly if we play as we did last night (albeit without letting in the two goals natch!).

It's not that bad,if France remain unbeaten in their next two games we only need to win one and draw one to qualify. |

Hope you do go through guys but didn't think you played that well. Got yourselves in front but then sat far too deep second half and let the Froggies get on top of you.
Still, at least you're there - we're not |

Watched the game in a pub which was full of whom I can only describe as 'tossers'. Half of them were busy pissing about, uninterested in the game, and putting off those who were. They were also plenty of English people who were deliberately supporting France to annoy the England football fans. I even heard one guy (who was English) say 'England are rubbish, I support France because they will win.'
Needless to say this was in a pub in an affluent part of London and although I don't believe in stereotyping, it was full of southern tw*ts. I will now be watching all the games at home with my mates until my return to the proper half of the country on the 27th.

I really am surprised how generous the TV pundits, newspapers and general public have been with Heskey today. It was his fault and his fault alone we lost that match last night and compared to Rooney, Owen and super-sub Vassell, it shows that England are currently threadbare on decent quality strikers.
Who else is there though? Allan Smith can't play 15 minutes without kicking someone, Allan Shearer has retired and Robbie Fowler is past it. I can only think of two other Premiership strikers that are English being Jermaine Defoe and the uncapped Carlton Cole. Blackburn's Jon Stead came into the Premiership too late but I am sure he'll feature before the 2006 World Cup.

What amazes me is just how the entire English nation seems to think they were brilliant last night !
If you watched the game with anything other than St-Georges-Cross-Coloured spectacles you'd have seen England totally outplayed by a better team.
Granted the defence - King in particular - was superb but it was so noticable because they were under the cosh for most of the match.
The goal - excellent though it was - was very much against the run of play and the penalty was probably the first time England had been out their own half in the second period.
Neither Beckham nor Owen contributed {girlie-boy's free kick excepted} and the midfield was overrun time and time again.
Anyway, now I've made loads of you angry, take time to check the match stats and see for yourselves ......
And before you say anything - I KNOW Scotland didn't qualify !

Sour grapes that you weren't there and joy that France had a little luck to give you something to cheer about just about sums up your post Ross!

Check the stats Dave !
Possession - France 57% England 43%
Shots on Target - France 5 England 3
Shots Off Target - France 12 England 5
Corners - France 5 England 2
Doesn't exactly support your theory but as an England fan you're entitled to be biased as we all are when it comes to our Teams - National or otherwise. {Except Phil when it comes to City of course ! }
Sorry you don't like my observations but despite a good backs-to-the-wall defensive display you WERE pretty much outplayed last night.

MacPhail is right. All I saw, especially in the second half, was wave after wave after wave after wave after wave of French attacks and some desperate English defending. Yoiu aren't going to win anything if you play like that.

I don't think the England defending was desperate. It was a very good defensive display. Just because our best play was in defence dosen't make it a bad performance.
France had run out of ideas towards the end and the attacks became predictable. Our defence coped very well.
Then 3 minutes of madness......

Looks like we're buggered on Thursday too then
Oh and for the record, I do remember Heskey taking at least part of the ball in that "foul". To blame him for the goal is crap, and to say we're short of strikers is also.
Vassell is crap in he premiership in comparision to most other English strikers, yet he gets given a try. Heskey is sh*t yes, but if we actually gave people like Smith, Beattie etc a chance they'd give us something back. Vassell has surprised a lot of people with his adaption to the international stage, I'm sure other English strikers can too.
As for blaming Heskey, the English defence should have been the oens making that tackle, and afterwards whould have been the ones defending the freekick - they didn't and we lost. Get over it, i have .... just.

I seem to be the only England fan on here that realises that we weren't the better team last night.
France were there for the taking, but I felt we conceded a lot of ground to them in midfield. Yes, the goals were because of individual errors, but if England had had a few more attacks, they could have been more than a goal up. Being only a goal up will obviously make the players more nervous. I got a feeling straight after the equaliser that we would concede another - however many times I tried to convince myself it wouldn't happen, because the players, who had worked their socks off, were drained and nervous after conceding the goal. This showed with Gerrard's back pass, despite what I've said on other threads, having since seen the replay a few more times, James is almost blameless for the penalty.
Agreed that Heskey isn't to blame for the Zidane free kick Woody, it was a forward's piece of defending, but personally I feel he shouldn't have been introduced to the game because he isn't good enough basically - his record for England is at best patchy. Rooney was causing France a lot of problems until he was subbed as well - a Rooney / Vassell partnership could have got the second goal as the French defence lacked pace throughout.
1-0 is never going to be enough to win a game. Yes, Heskey made an error, but against a world class team with players like Zidane anything can happen. The free kick was a moment of brilliance, not an individual error.
