Can we have this woman de-ported please?
Clare Gorham, writer and broadcaster (Guardian)
"To me the union flag is an ugly, angular, inaccessible, frightening design, but I find the flag of St George much more hostile. There's something about the thinness of the cross itself that reminds me of a trickle of blood, for one.
"I went to a Catholic school and I always likened a lot of Catholic ideals to certain aspects of nazism and fascism. We had a schoolbook called Crusader and there was a picture of a knight with the cross of St George pompously on his horse. I was brought up in the 70s and these flags were about 'Britain for the British, ain't no black in the union jack'. I think the symbol has never been available to everybody.
"I'm somebody who actually hates football anyway. My dislike is substantiated by the number of black friends who try to watch football matches and know they're going to have to sit through chants of 'n*****!' and banana-throwing. They can support the English team till they're blue in the face but they will never be accepted by any football terrace in the country.

What an absolute idiot.
I remember seeing a new 'design' for the union flag whereby half of the white diagonals had been replaced by black stripes.
I mean for christ's sake what is this country coming to,Its a disgrace it is. Makes me sick. Would you see anyone else proposing a new design because a few million blacks had swamped their country.Nah didn't think so, Infact they would probably fly their flags higher, Prouder.Butno the good old lefties on Britain come to the f***ing rescue, Well bollocks to them all.

What a load of rubbish.
Nothing wrong with supporting your country and nothing wrong with displaying the flag.
Obviously at a loose end and needed to write an article, so chose a subject she knows sweet FA about.

I have heard shouts of "n*****" and "get back to the jungle" while standing in the Longhurst during the 03/04 season.
So she's not talking complete crap.

I don't think so. The young fellow shouting that from the Longhurst looked incapable of tying his own shoelaces, let alone operating a personal computer.

Question: if you weren't British, would you find the Union Flag design "angular and ugly" or attractive?
Personally I think there are more aesthetically pleasing national flags. Stylistically I prefer the Cross of St George to the Union Flag.

It's part of a range of views in today's Guardian 2 section. Topical page filler and classic Guardian territory, to be honest

...and this...

Close friend of mine?
I don't think so, thank you.
Everyone knows I'm not in the slightest bit patriotic, but I don't try and justify anything I say or do with pseudo-liberal bollox like this.
Yes, there's racism at some football matches, but you don't fight it by tarring all football fans with the same brush. And you certainly don't fight it by worrying about the design of a flag, for feck's sake. I mean, that bloody Libyan flag, it's all green and threatening. Solid green! On both sides! The b*stards!
I have no idea who Ms Gorham is, but she seems to suffer from the same syndrome that so many Guardian columnists do, and thinks that working class people are ignorant racist thugs. In reality, they're so far up their own arse, they've become right wing parodies of themselves.
The Guardian is now a million miles away from its radical roots, and just seems to be a vehicle for middle class Blairites who get paid more for one whiney article than most of us earn in a month. To be honest, I wouldn't wipe my dogs' arses on it these days, let alone my own.
It's either a late April Fool's joke or an early attempt to win some sort of award in Private Eye.
Either way, she's failed, because it isn't funny.
