England Line-up
James, G Neville (P Neville 85), Terry (King), Campbell, A Cole, Scholes (Dyer 77), Beckham (J Cole 81), Gerrard (Hargreaves 82), Lampard (Butt 82), Owen (Vassell 82), Rooney (Heskey 77).
Owen scores after 22 minutes after the Japan keeper spills a shot from Gerrard.
The line-up above is Svens supposed first choice line up for the opening Euro 2004 match v France. Sven chose a diamond formation.
England played well in the first half however the second half was "lacklustre" due to tiredness.
Both Beckham and Gary Neville picked up knocksbut they should be fine for the Iceland match on Saturday.

Worrying that it was only a draw, but to be fair Japan had a reasonable World Cup 2 years ago so they aren't that bad opposition.
Perhaps, although he does seem to like the diamond formation, maybe 4-4-2 with Bridge and Cole providing natural width would be the answer?
The good thing from that I suppose is Owen scored, with his form being a little patchy last season at times. |

Well in the last warm up match v Iceland on Saturday I think really a win should in theory be on, and a goal or two from Rooney maybe.

Quite a good game to watch, but from an England point of view we need to improve if we're going to suceed in Euro 2004. Japan are a well managed team with Zico as their manager and play some smart football, but still they're the sort of team that we should be beating.
Here's how I would rate the performances: (out of 10)
James 6, Neville 7, Terry 7, Campbell 6, Cole 7, Beckham 7, Scholes 6, Lampard 6, Gerrard 7, Rooney 5, Owen 6.
In goal, David James played again, and has still to convince me he is the man for the job. He shows good shot-stopping skills, but his handling is quite poor and he is slow to get down to low shots (i.e. Japan's goal).
The defence did well, and IMO this has to be the back four we play with at Euro 2004. The full-backs supported the midfield and Terry and Campbell formed a good partnership in the centre.
The midfield also looked quite promising in the first half, but they tired and faded out as the game went on. Playing with Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes in the middle seems to work as they can alternate with each other quite easily.
Finally, (and to finish my essay!) up-front we had Rooney and Owen. However, despite playing a few good balls and showing neat pieces of skill, they seemed to be leaving the ball for each other on more than one occasion, and I think there needs to be a stronger communication link between these two.

Agreed on James, I would rather have Robinson in goal, James is inclined to do occasional silly things and is a tad unreliable, hence i think that really Robinson should have been given more matches than he has been given (he has only 4 caps) and thus should be our No 1 keeper for Euro 2004.

Stuff James and Robinson, get Martyn in goal. He's way better than the both of em put together!
Tiredness, thats balls. They're supposed to be very fit professionals. And surely a few weeks rest is enough before 1 friendly game!

I agree with Ross on the subject of Nigel Martyn, he had a great season at Everton and although he is in his late thirties he could still have done a great job.

Don't know really about Martyn, remember Seaman in the last World Cup, he was a similar age and was useless at that level. I wasn't particularly impressed with Martyn when he did get his international chance (e.g. one of his blunders against Romania sent us out of Euro 2000).
I think Robinson should be first choice for Euro 2004. Much more solid than James, safer on crosses etc. James reminds me a lot of Porter - on his day he can make some great saves, but he's very inconsistant which means he could cost us some games with mistakes. |

Yeh i know but he's still a top class keeper. Especially his performance against Liverpool in the season just gone.

The best keeper in the coming years will be Chris Kirkland, he is only 22 and ever improving. David James is too dodgy as is Paul Robinson and Ian Walker.

Right, tell me one thing, what has Paul Robinson ever done "dodgy"?, and also tell me when has Chris Kirkland ever played well?.
He is by far the most over-rated 'keeper ... well ever, he may be a solid one, but is also often injured and never really played awesomely well. As for Paul Robinson, I can only think of one mistake he has ever, ever made as a 'keeper, away at Anfield with a free kick, and that was debatable as the on coming attacker was offside.
Robinson is, at the moment a bette 'keeper on merrit as he has earn't that. I agree with David James though, he is s***e, but as for Kirkland, we'll judge him when he actually plays for a period of time, yeah?! |

Paul Robinson has made a catalogue of errors for Leeds this season, just look at how many goals have been conceeded, and dont blame the defence because its mostly the keepers fault when errors are made at the back.

Balls.
Robbo was one of their best players, you try going in goal when you have a bunch of generally rubbish players on your team and have players such as Henry and Van Nistelrooy bearing down on you. You haven't much hope.

No, if the defence leaves the keeper on his own he's not likely to keep everything out is he?!

Where has everyone got the idea that David James is crap from?
He used to flap at crosses about 8 years ago, but I think he's earnt the number 1 shirt since World Cup 2002 with a series of good performances.

Despite his good shot-stopping ability, his handling is quite poor and he often fumbles shots.
Also, look at Japan's goal - the ball was kicked straight at him, and it went through his legs and he just collapsed to the floor in an attempt to save it!

So Fettis was to blame for York's poor defence a few years back, instead of Sertori and Hobson?
Perhaps not.

As for David James, I agree that he's a bit too inconsistant for international football - you see him making far more errors than Robinson, for example. The problem is, one slip against someone with the attacking players of France, for example, could cost England. I can't understand why Robinson hasn't been given his chance - he is a much better keeper than James already. The two remind me a bit of Porter and Ovendale - one generally very solid and reliable, the other inconsistant but can pull off some truly great saves when on top form. At international level, Robinson has to be the best choice.

Yeh he probably has earnt it, but there's still something about him that is prone to mistakes, but hopefully none of them will come in Euro 2004!

what about all those games for west ham, coming to clear the ball when he was 20 yards from the ball and the attacker was rite next to it and so on and so forth
