I've noticed that as we get nearer to Euro 2004, I'm seeing the flag of St George flying far more than in previous years.
Now, is that something as a result of being in Bolton, or is York the same?
And does it mean the "racist" implications that had been getting attached to it are fading?
(I was going to say "Do all these people know St George was from the Middle East and we just adopted him?" but then couldn't be bothered.)

Well i know a few skins, and its more a Union Jack thing than a St. George. And besides, i don't see how anyone can claim that flying your national flag is racist anyway. But thats for another time.
I haven't seen that many flags round here at the moment, but in cars going by there seem to be a fair few!

I've got my Union Jack draped around me as I type this post out. What's this about a European Championship?

Sad thing is that England/Britain is probably the only Country who are made to feel ashamed of their own flag thanks to the "liberal" minority within.
Much as people slag the Yanks, there's a real and genuine pride in the Stars & Stripes/National Anthem at sporting events over there and we could learn a lot from it ......
The "Powers That Be" in this Country would rather celebrate the culture of Ireland and any number of other Countries rather than their own and frankly it's about time people stood up and showed that being proud of their National Flag doesn't equate to racism.
Pride in the Scottish and Welsh flags doesn't make Me or Geoff racist - pride in the Cross of St George doesn't make you guys racist either .....

The good thing is that there has been such a backlash to this that there are more St. George Cross flags around than ever and the country looks much better for it.

Nottingham's covered in the things.
Have to say, it's people of all backgrounds that have them on their cars, which can only be a good thing.
Not seen any Union Jacks, as there are no ships here. The Union Flag on the otherhand...

Coming, as she does, from the naval town of Chatham, my other half regularly reminds me of this point.

These flags are everywhere. I was in Manchester this afternoon and there was a governor selling 'em from a handcart - so cheap and nasty that you could actually see through 'em. But he was doing a roaring trade.
Also, I think they're selling an England supporters' kit at Argos for about £12.99 which includes flag, wig, inflatable hand and face paint. Bargain!!!

Enfield's covered in flags - cars, windows, shops, people walking round wearing them as superman-style capes - and as Mossie says, most colours and creeds seem to be using it.

As someone who would probably be described a "liberal left", personally I take great pride in the English flag. It's nothing to do with the racists who hijack it for their own agenda.
All the pubs around where I live are covered in England flags and quite right too.

I've had my York City England stuck in my road facing window most of the year!
Got a few more up now and they are staying until my German Exchange partner has seen them all and will have to sleep under one

I think there is nothing wrong with having the flag of St George or Union flag to show you are proud of your country. We wear our City shirst to be proud of York so why not show an England or British flag and be proud. That is not being political it is being patriotic surely?
York Minstermen are considering getting a Union Flag with YORK MINSTERMEN scrawled on it. Is that wrong? No of course not.
Get a flag and a shirt and cheer England on to Euro glory.

Where were you when we talked with Harrogate Minstermen about a flag Frank?
(Too much ale as usual?)
(It was only an enquiry Frank The members will decide - we are democratic after all )

I know York isn't it North Yorkshire anymore, but has it ceded from the United Kingdom as well?
Get over yourself Frank.

All I would say to this "new" debate is I am proud to wave the flag of St George and the Union Jack - but I would add I despise the British Nationalist Party. (Who in all likelyhood if they ever had any political power would not allow me to say that)
But let us not get political - it is football - which is FAR more important!
