For me, you've gotta after the last few days. Very impressive. Vaughan back if fit - and the end of Hussain? Bit harsh after his ton today, but he's probably the weakest link in the middle order and Strauss proved he's got quality.

How can you drop Hussain after a hundred, 3 extremely good catches and a run out (his direct hit and not that of Strauss )
I think we've now got an extremely competitive squad of 13 (Anderson as well) and players are going to have to be picked on form. Butcher will have to go for the next test - everyone else in the team knowing the pressure will be on and if they fail they will lose their place as well.
Its the first time in years that we've had genuine competition for places and a succesful side. The only area we are lacking is in the spin department. Any failure from the Batsmen and there's Collingwood and whoever is left out ready to come back in, for the bowlers Anderson is pushing very hard with some fine performances in the championship.
Bring on the Aussies!

Always thought Strauss was crap.

Very tough choice, Strauss has to be retained and after Nasser's performance today it will be very difficult to drop him. What about Butcher? Or do his performaces in the Windies save him? To use an old cliche, it is a good problem to have.....

I think we should maybe lose a bowler since Hoggard didn't even bowl in the second innings.
I'm not saying drop Hoggard.
On a Headingley pitch though i would say drop Giles and keep Strauss I can't really see much at Headingley for spinners. |

Listening to Nass at the end on TMS tonight, he gave a strong hint he may announce his retirement after today's game. Not a bad way to go - better to go out on a high than risk a disappointing exit after being dropped, like Dazzler.
He's been a hero for England in recent years

Very true, he can bow out with his head very much held high!
Struass looks to have a bright future, he must come from a hell of a jean pool

I suspected it might have been his last test match just before the match ended. Nasser scored 30 of the last 40 runs needed and it seemed very much that Thorpe was just taking singles to give him the strike.
I couldn't believe some of the C4 commentators yesterday suggesting that 282 was a bigger enough lead to defend. I actually said to the missus that they will knock it off for 3/4 wickets and now wish I had a cheeky £10 on this result.
It's also great to have Boycott back on TV thoughlistening to him, I fear he is not 100%.

There's no finer way to start the day than to turn on the television to watch England in action in the sunshine at Lords and hearing those famous words:
"Morning Richie. Morning Everybody"

Given that Headingley is a spinners graveyard, I would imagine Giles will be dropped and we will go with seven batsmen.
Unless Hussain retires of course.......

Even so I'd go with seven batsmen anyway - if Vaughan is fit, he could bowl spin if it was desperately required. I can't think of the last English spin bowler to have great success at Headingley.

I think the bigger thing is the immediate dropping of Geraint Jones and reinstatement of Chris Read. Jones can't keep. I reckon he gave away about as many runs as he scored. I'd rather have Read scoring 20s and keeping it tight behind the stumps than Jones scoring 40s and giving 30-odd away in byes and dropped catches. |

Be fair, did you see some of those byes? No keeper would have stopped those.
For me, Jones kept well, held his catches and contributed a good 45 runs at a time when England needed precisely that. He'll play next time - and rightly so.

The weakest link in the middle order?, well both Strauss and Vaughan are opening batsmen so I doubt this would be the right thing to do. Although, that said, didn't Vaughan or Tresco used to bat at number 3 at a time for England? if so, then I suppose it could work.
Giles will be dropped I presume, and I really hope Nasser doesn't retire, he at least needs to make 100 tests. Oh-so close.

I'd say the reason Boycott doesn't sound 100% is that he had cancer of the throat. I'd guess no-one would sound 100% after that. I don't think it actually means he isn't recovered, he'll presumably never sound like his old self.

I was lucky enough to go to Lords on FRiday. Strauss looked really shaky and I think he would have struggled against a better bowling attack, keep Hussein until the end of summer.

OK maybe I'm being a tad harsh, but that dropped catch off Chris Martin was unforgiveable. Should have been a regulation catch, but he went for the spectacular dive when it plainly wasn't needed. It gifted NZ 23 runs that, while inconsequential in the end, could have cost us.

Keep Strauss and move him to third, drop Giles. Mark Butcher can bowl spin if needed, can't he?
TBH I think Vaughan is the weak link in terms of ability, but he is a good captain.

Butcher is strictly military medium when he turns his arm over.
Vaughan? Weak link? You're having a laugh aren't you? OK, so since he took on the captaincy his form has suffered. Form, however, is temporary. Class is permanent. And he bowls a mean off break.

Agree John D, Vaughan can bowl a bit of spin and IMO doesn't bowl enough in test matches. Afterall, he did dispose of a certain Sachin Tendulca a few years back too.
Butcher and Trecotic can both bowl, but when we have the likes of Hoggard, Jones, Flintoff and Harmison, who needs them? |
