I know it's a friendly and a few important players are out, but is tonight's team really the best of the rest?
Woodgate?
Neville?
Butt?
Rooney?
You could just as well read Cooper, Ward, Nogan and Wood. |

You having a laugh?, people must be given the chance to impress and have a go in the England shirt. How else are we going to find alternatives, and with quite a few injuries in the side why not?
Rooney has always done well for England, Woodgate is a class act in defence and has never been given a chance at international level. Butt did well in the world cup and is the sitter that is eneded to allow Beckham, Gerrard and Scholes to puch forwards (even though at least one isn't playing tonight - need practice) As for Neville I do agree, and to some extent I do with Butt but the other two are fine and need a chance. |

| Jim H, what are you on about. Woodgate is at worst the 4 best English centreback. Who else can play upfront with Owen except Rooney. Nicky Butt as pointed out was our best player in the last World Cup and Phil Neville, surely underated as he seems to play most weeks in a team managed by one of Britains greatest managers. |

I don't know about that! From what I've seen of this lot - on the Wellyvision, and in person - Sven could do a lot worse. Like bringing back Frank Lampard, for example.

| Carragher started, as did Vassel. I'd call them more weak links than the ones listed, not that they are bad players and can obviously do a job. |

Que? With the exception of Gerrard, he's the best English midfielder in the premiership.

He was bloody shocking when I saw the Liechtenstein game at Owd Traffud.

I felt sorry for Vassell today having to go off injured but I think Defoe is a better player anyway and proved it today.
I think Sven was right to try out players like Rooney and Butt today, as he has to decide on his squad soon.
Today's match wasn't exactly inspiring though, and not many players did much to prove themselves worthy of a place in the squad. |

So Butt's form at a tournament two years ago is enough for his selection then? Woodgate is a liability, more inclined to giving free kicks away than saving goals from being scored. Has Rooney really done enough to warrant a regular place? Maybe so. Neville is certainly not underrated and like all Manchester Utd players is probably quite the opposite.
Mind you I'm not really arsed as it is just Prima donnas from the Prem. Just trying to cause controversy! |

Vassell was unlucky, but Defoe came on and did a super job. A strong bet to be Svens fourth striker if he carries on his club form. Three keepers on the bench and none of them used. I think that Sven should have started with Robinson as I feel he is a better bet for Euro 2004 than James, who is unreliable and prone to the odd gaffe. John Terry though should be a certainty in defence and Owen Hargreaves also played well. Hit the bar with a free kick. But I agree none of the fringe players really did enough, apart from maybe Defoe, to cement their place in the squad.
