First visit to rugby league match and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Seen a few familiar faces including a very glum looking UkrainianPhil wearing an "I love Sophie" t-shirt, AL and YorkCityForever, some Harrogate Minstermen, Gizmo and few of those young scamps who come along to footie at Oaklands.

Bit surprised when announced the crowd of 1540. It appeared more and they had to delay kick off for 10 minutes to let everyone in. Youngsters under 12 were just a £1 and under 16's were £4. I paid £9.

Not too impressed the PA announcer. Bit like that guy from Minster FM (James Watt) and started to get a bit tedious after a while.

The match was excellent and although York were the better side, Gateshead didn't give up and kept battling. Highlights for me included watching Gateshead No.2. The guy was built like a friggin' tank and it took 4-5 Knights to stop him each time. Gateshead weren't helped by their fullback getting needlessly sentoff for kneeing (the eventual Man of the Match in the ribs) a tryscorer in as early as the 5th minute. Interestingly the referee awarded a penalty to be taken straight after the conversion.

A guy called Alex Godfrey was the main difference and this bloke has blistering pace. He took one ball in his own 22 and was only brought down finally in oppositions 22. Unlike the utterly ridiculous Man of the Match decisions normally occuring at BC these days, this one was spot on and no-one could say any different.

I think it ended 54-24 (or something like that) to the Knights and it was excellent entertainment. Totally different atmosphere to football but certainly worth £9

Do you mean to say you actually enjoyed watching a match involving the terrible Sunday-hogging fan-stealing glory-hunting York City Knights?

Laughing Laughing

You should be ashamed of yourself Tim!

Roll on Sunday for the Sunday-oppressed kind-hearted glory-rejecting City!

Agree with you there Tim
But why was only 2 turnstiles open into the DL, I also went to the wrong one with my fiver reduced ticket for been a city season ticket holder no signs to say where to go.
bloody kids at the back of the DL stand were copying the ball boy trying to get on to the stand roof.
Overall a good game.
And yeah MOM was Godfrey

Had the wife in tow, I believe, so that'll explain it. Wink

I presume the Knights were not at their best tonight, or Gateshead raised their game because at 16-0 down and then to go down to 10 men, Thunder were there for the proverbial good hiding. But some sloppy defending from York gifted them the next two tries, and although you knew the Knights would win the game and were always comfortably ahead, it was a determined effort from the visitors. Sat in the main stand with Yorkie, so couldn't tell how full it was as we were sat at the extreme end, but looked a decent amount in the Longhurst.

Agreed with MOTM, although the full back (Nathan Graham?) had a good game too.

If it wasn't for the drum beating and a few bodies chanting along to it, it would have been a fairly dullish atmosphere to be honest.

An 'okay' experience, but don't think I'll be venturing to HS to watch them in a hurry. Wish them well though.

Just read the YEP report on last night's match. That Richard Agar is a hard bloke to please. Wonder what he would have made of City's recent performances?

Damn! I guess it was the force of habit from keying in ten, a la footy, instead of 12!

Cheers! Wink
