Offiong the net.

Richard Offiong, City’s new loan signing from Newcastle United has been quick to pledge goals and bring to end the club’s profligacy in front of goal. Offiong, 20, was signed by the club at one minute to five on Friday and played in his new sides stalemate against Torquay on Saturday. Despite not getting on the score sheet, his performance showed promise and he was finally substituted after tiring late on.

And this latest taste of first team action has certainly left him hungry for more. "I really enjoyed playing on Saturday although I didn't have much chance to get to know the lads before the game. But I've started to get to know them now and they are a great set of lads and I can see myself doing well here."

City currently have the worst scoring record in the Division and Offiong hopes to use all the experience he has of the league basement from a loan spell at Darlington last season, to help the club secure their league status. “The gaffer got in touch and said he needed a quick striker who can score lots of goals and I duly obliged to take the opportunity. While I'm here I'm hoping to score lots of goals and play as well as I can both for me and for York. And hopefully I can help end their scoring problems because at the end of the day, that's what I love to do."

The move could prove to be mutually beneficial as Offiong looks to get his career back on track after two injury lay-offs. The South-Shields born youngster was quick to point out though that these problems were behind him: "I have been injured for quite a while," he said. "So this is a great chance to get some games under my belt before the end of the season.”

Offiong’s pedigree is certainly without question, having been a member of the England U-20 squad and lining up alongside the likes of Chelsea’s Glen Johnson against Germany, Italy, Portugal, Argentina and Turkey, last season. "It's been good playing for England; I have really enjoyed being involved and getting the chance to play with some of the best players in the world. It's great seeing everyone progress and it gives me more confidence as well. A full England place is what I'm eventually aiming for." For now though, lets hope he’ll settle for a goal and three points against Yeovil on Saturday!
