Chris Brass today reconfirmed his support for City keeper Chris Porter after his surprise choice in selecting the former Darlington stopper over Mark Ovendale on Saturday.
Although making an error against Scunthorpe in midweek, many were left wondering when Ovendale, an ever present this season, was demoted to the bench for the Torquay clash. To many supporters, his form over the season was one of the pluses of the campaign and his heriocs have been vital in earning points for a very low scoring City side.
However, the York manager indicated his search for a "voice" and "leader" at the back, given Brass's own suspension may have been a major factor in the switch. Said Brass;
"He (Porter) organised the lads in front of him and it certainly made a difference. We have been lacking a voice since I came out of the side, but he's come in and given that."
It would appear the keeper's jersey is now firmly within the grasp of Porter, possibly until the end of the season. Ovendale meanwhile, may feel a touch hard done to, although Brass seemed to suggest that he had lost some degree of confidence in his regular keeper;
"I felt a lot more comfortable on the sidelines and you have to give Chris credit for that. He came for one or two crosses with confidence and when you see your keeper do that, you relax more and are less nervous."
The York boss further confirmed that Porter would be the preferred choice for the home tie with Yeovil on Saturday and would retain the shirt for the remainder of the season if he continued to impress.
