By Rail:
Take a GNER York-London train to London Kings Cross.
Then take the tube (Circle/Met/H&C lines) to either Liverpool Street for services to Prittlewell; or to Tower Hill for Fenchurch Street to Southend Central trains.
Trains from Liverpool Street are every 20 minutes and take just under 1 hour, trains from Fenchurch Street are every 10 minutes and take between 50 and 70 minutes.
Cheaper tickets
It is cheaper to buy advance GNER York-London tickets, then buy a day return from London to Southend.
Directions from Prittlewell station to the ground
If you just want to see the match then it is easiest to go to Prittlewell station (Served by trains every 20 minutes from London Liverpool Street) which is only around 5 mins walk away from the ground. leave the station by the set of steps at the very end of the platform. Turn right over the bridge and continue past The Railway Pub. At the traffic lights, which mark the junction between East Street and Victoria Avenue, turn right and continue down the hill, passing the main entrance to Roots Hall. At the next set of traffic lights, turn left into Fairfax Drive and continue for 400m or so to the Fairfax Drive (Away) entrance on your right.
Directions from Southend Central to the ground
If you want to go to Southend town centre or the sea front before the game you're better off taking a train from London Fenchurch Street to Southend Central (trains are every 10 minutes) which is situated at the heart of the town centre.
To reach the ground from the town centre, head up the pedestrianised High Street (away from the seafront) to a new Odeon complex. Walk past the Odeon to the right and round through a series of bus-stops. Cross the dual-carriageway and head down Victoria Avenue; Roots Hall is about fifteen minutes down on the left.
