What an interesting start to the 2003/04 season. Yeovil playing their first season in the Football League, and they are doing very well indeed, while at the other end of the table we have Darlington; a new 27,500 all seater stadium, but The Quakers are struggling and have only managed to pick up three points.
York City kicked off their season with an excellent victory away at Carlisle, before beating Northampton Town at home in front of 3,870 fans. Then they made it 3 games without loss when they beat Huddersfield Town away by one goal to nil. After three games, York City lie in 2nd place.
Local's Hull City had a cracking start to the season, beating Darlington 4-1 and putting them top of the league, but two defeats on the trot sent them down to 10th.
The Reynolds Arena - Darlington's new ground. As a Darlington fan, I went down to the ground for the first home game of the season, and it looked really promising. At least 1500 queuing up outside the ticket office to buy tickets, and the traffic was at a standstill back to the motorway. Kick-off was delayed by 15 mins to try and get everybody into the ground.

The game was a disaster for Darlington. Losing 2-0 on new home turf was just the start they could have done without. Reynolds however seemed to think that he could get the 11,600 fans who turned up - plus more!
After the game Reynolds said "Every club has teething problems on its first day, and the FA has told me we coped with it better than most clubs. We had two major problems. There were a lot of people queuing for tickets, and inside it was clear we need to open more kiosks. We have already started measuring up for three new ticket offices this morning, one on each side, and within two to three weeks they will be open. Then we will have 20 windows serving instead of six. For most games, people buy tickets during the week before a match, but we had 13,000 people arriving around half an hour before the game."
However, Bank Holiday Monday arrived, and most teams were in action. Hull City defeated Cambridge 2-0 away, while Darlington continued their Reynolds Arena campaign. One nil down after 57 minutes in front of about 4660 fans. Booing started, but not for long. The Quakers scored two goals, and most of the fans went home happy, apart from one man who sat on his own all game moaning about everything that's anything.
Yeovil Town took on Northampton Town in front of 6,105 - they did lose 2-0, but after 4 games they lie in 8th place. As newcomers to the Football League, they must be fairly pleased with the start they have made. York City did not play on Bank Holiday Monday, but at the end of the day they were still in 3rd place, just one point away from the top - having played one less game than the two teams ahead of them.
I seem to have forgotten about Doncaster Rovers - another local side who are doing very well after winning promotion from the Conference. They lie in 4th place after 4 games, with one home win, one home draw, one away win, and one away draw.
You will probably want to know who my money is on this season? I reckon that both Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil Town will win promotion (Even if one of them has to do it via the playoffs). York, Hull City and Oxford will also be up there, along with Swansea.
At the other end, Carlisle, Lincoln and Southend will struggle to survive in Division 3. I would say Darlington, but after seeing them defeat Leyton Orient, and hold Bradford City to a 0-0 draw, I actually think they can do quite well.
