Chris Porter started off as a trainee with his hometown club Sunderland. He turned professional in 1998, but failed to make the first team at The Stadium of Light, and eventually moved on to Darlington in March 2000. However, Chris’ stay there was short and he found himself appearing for both Hartlepool and Southend in that same year, as well as having a short playing spell in Iceland. He returned to
Darlington in March 2002, but found it impossible to get into the first team the season after that, as when the first team keeper was out, loan signings were brought in to cover.
Brass snapped up the keeper in the summer of 2003 as a backup to number one Mark Ovendale. But, after a long wait playing only reserve team football, Chris finally made the first team jersey his and was offered a new deal after the release of Ovendale in 2004. Porter is still a key feature in the York City side, keeping out the highly regarded young goalkeeper David Stockdale. His on-field passion has also made him a hit with the fans.
