Left-sided wingback David Merris was a close season capture from local non-league Harrogate Town. After being released by Rotherham as a teenager, Merris has grasped his second chance in the Football League with both hands, showing a pleasing desire to get forward with a goal in only his second appearance for the club.
In his return season to professional football (on his year out from university!), David impressed the fans and management down the left-hand side and was one of the few players to be kept on by Brass, after the club's relegation to the conference in 2004.Following relegation, Merris has become an important player for the club, and is a key feature in
manager Billy McEwan's plans. Merris was voted 'clubman of the year' last season for his efforts throughout a tough first season in the Conference for York City.
