Scarborough-born Dunning started out with Blackburn Rovers, signing professional forms there in 1999. However, despite a four year stay there, and captaining the reserve team, Darren made only a handful of first team appearances for them. He was loaned out a total of five times to the lower divisions, appearing for Bristol City, Rochdale, Blackpool, Torquay United and Macclesfield Town.
He was released from his contract by then Blackburn Rovers manager Graeme Souness in the summer of 2003, and as one of his first signings as new boss, was brought to York by Chris Brass.
The aggressive and prominent Darren Dunning brings a little bit of Premier class to the midfield of City, and has already established himself as a fans favourite. Dunning has showed clear talent since joining the city ranks, and he was awarded the 'clubman of the year' award in the 2003/2004 season. Dunning has now established himself as a first team regular since City have been in playing the Conference.
