Q&A - Daley Mayall (Editor
of Ginner’s Left Foot)
We caught up with Mr Mayall and he generously granted us an exclusive
interview.
The
intrepid Daley Mayall of YE PEST, editor in chief of GLF, works out what
he's going to put on the 3:45 at Haydock Park!
Q: So Daley, ‘GINNER’S
LEFT FOOT’ is now seven issues old. How did the Fanzine come about?
A: Myself and
co-editor, Angus MacCoatup decided to bring back a Fanzine for City fans
as there was demand on the Internet for one. It all started during the
well-documented problems at the end of 2001 when the club was on the
verge of folding. We produced free ‘Judas’ posters for fans on the
‘Save City’ protest march to wave at our greedy ex Chairman, and
they went down very well. We have good contacts in the Print industry,
so we knew the score about producing booklets. We got fans from the
forum involved in submitting articles and took it from there.
Q: How did you decide on the
name of the Fanzine? Who is Ginner?
A: We conducted a poll
among fans at the web site www.Minstermen.net. There were six choices,
and ‘Ginner’s Left Foot’ got around 45% of the vote if I recall.
Within These Walls; Past and Crescent; Bootham Bugle; 2002 BC - ‘A
York City Odyssey’ were some of the other options. 2002 BC was my
favourite actually at the time, but in a way, I’m glad it worked out
as it did. I’m very fond of the name now. Ginner was the nickname of a
dedicated left back, Wayne Hall, who struck the winning penalty in a
shoot-out at Wembley in a play-off final against Crewe in 1993 - with
his left foot of course!!
Q: I presume Daley Mayall is
a pseudonym, then?
A: Ooohhhhh, yes! I
used it to post messages on the old ‘Red and Blue Net’ discussion
forum and it’s stuck. Can’t remember how I first thought of it. My
brother is called Rik!
Q: What about Angus MacCoatup,
your co-editor?
A: What about the lazy
git? Needs a kick up the a......Oh,... you mean about his name? I used
that name, at his suggestion, for a humorous post I made about a City
Squads’ trip to Bonnie Scotland. I named him my Scotland correspondent
of the YE PEST. My mate started using it as his pseudonym, and that
stuck too.
Q: YE PEST? What the hell is
that?
A: I pretended to be a
newspaper reporter. Daley Mayall (Daily Mail) of ‘The Yorkshire
Evening PEST’ (Yorkshire Post/Evening Press - both local papers)
Q: Ah, things are beginning
to become clearer now! So when did you see your first City match?
A: My first City match
was against Blackpool in 1975 on my birthday. I remember being sat in
the Pop Stand and that it was a 0-0 draw. John Burridge was the
‘keeper for ‘Pool. I guess City wore the famous ‘Y’ front shirt
that day, too!
Q: A sound knowledge of
City’s fortunes, then!
A: I’d like to think
so. I was a regular in the Shippo from 1980 until the latter Craig
years, because of his un-ambitious stance and only went to odd matches,
but returned with a vengeance when I realised the club might die without
my support!!
Q: So how did the debut issue
of GLF sell?
A: We printed just
over 300 and have virtually sold out. We promised that any profits from
sales of the first edition would be forwarded to the newly formed City
Supporters’ Trust. We were able to give them a cheque for £100.
Q: Nice one. Have plenty of
City fans submitted stuff for publication and offered to help out with
selling the mag, etc?
A: Yes. We have a nice
base of around 10 guys, who regularly contribute, but we are always
wanting fresh material from other City fans, the Fanzine is THEIR voice,
after all! There are always one or two willing to help us sell the mag
outside the ground.
Q: How much is involved in
producing the mag and are you making loads of dosh from it?
A: Ha! You wouldn’t
want to be paying me by the hour, put it that way. Myself and Angus put
a hell of a lot of work into it for little financial reward. We get a
few pints out of it, lets say. We do it for the love of it and get much
satisfaction on seeing a job through from start to finish and seeing
supporters smiling at our articles. Getting positive feedback is always
nice. It’s good for the ego, if nowt else!!
Q: So how long do you think
you will last for?
A: How long is a piece
of string? As long as we are not out of pocket and still producing a
reasonable standard of Fanzine, we will keep doing it, I guess. But
don’t expect us to last as long as Terrace Talk from the 80’s!!!
