Hartlepool
were the runaway leaders and looked to have the championship within their
sights, until the final few weeks of the season when they seemed to fall
apart.
Rushden took full advantage of Hartlepool's poor form, were unbeaten in
their last 11 games and won the title on the final day of the season.
Wrexham also finished the season very strongly, taking full advantage
of games in hand, to cement their place in the final automatic promotion
slot at the expense of Bournemouth.
However Bournemouth got the promotion they deserved after defeating
Lincoln in the play-off final at Cardiff.
At the other end of the table it was a surprise to see Shrewsbury go
down after narrowly missing out on the play-offs the previous season. They
were joined by Exeter, due to there being two relegation places from this
season onwards to enable an extra conference team to be promoted.
City had looked like gaining an automatic promotion place, being in 3rd
place with just 6 games to go. However not a single win in their last 6
games saw City slump to 10th place.
